MORE than $21 million worth of cocaine has turned up in boxes of bananas delivered to Aldi supermarkets in and around Berlin, police say.
Staff working at 14 of the discount supermarkets reported the stashes of narcotics tucked in the produce deliveries from Colombia, which police believe ended up at the stores by accident on Monday.
“Apparently there was a logistical mistake somewhere along the line,” police spokesman Stefan Redlich told AFP, adding that investigators were now trying to determine their intended destination.
He said the 386kg shipment was the biggest single cocaine find in the history of the German capital.
In a similar case in January 2014, Berlin supermarket workers discovered 140kg of the drug worth around six million euros also hidden in crates of bananas.
That time packets of the drug turned up in seven banana crates in five stores, according to The Local.
The news site reported that the bananas were orginally bound for the UK but after bad weather delayed the cargo ship they were traveling in they ended up in Hamburg.
Banana crates appear to be a popular way to move cocaine. In December 2013 Norwegian police found 145kg of cocaine stashed inside them. The previous summer Danish customs found 200kg of the drug in banana boxes kept in the warehouses of the Coop supermarket chain.
Nor are bananas the only food stuff used to smuggle the drug. In November 2013 a woman was arrested after she was caught smuggling 2kg of cocaine inside Halloween pumpkins at Montreal airport.
The Canadian Border Services Agency said officers became suspicious after security scans of the woman’s luggage showed dark masses stuffed inside of three pumpkins she was travelling with.
