Afghanistan opium harvest at record high

Afghan opium cultivation has reached a record level, with more than 200,000 hectares planted with the poppy for the first time, the United Nations says. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24919056)

The UNODC report said the harvest was 36% up on last year, and if fully realised would outstrip global demand.

Either that, or the price will stay the same and quality will go up. I don't think this is "good news" in the slightest.

Most of you all are getting stepped on dope (let's face the obvious, people....), so unless you're high up in a pyramid, this isn't going to in the slightest effect you.

It might help your dealer earn an extra buck here and there, and it might help the distributors earn a LOT of extra money... but in the end, it won't be a bunch of discount heroin - such a thing won't happen, or exist for long if it does.

There is more than enough food in the world and in the region. It's not about supply it's distribution.

I don't know about that... they are going to have to move the product one way or another, and that would mean lowering the price. As it becomes cheaper for afghan heroin, mexican and colombian tar is going to have to lower price to compete with powder which can now stretch the country because of its lower price, even if it's only at the top. I find that the black market is the purest form of capitalism on the planet. It's essentially a completely unregulated market driven economy. If that's the case, the price has to lower all the way to the bottom. Imagine if because of the low price at the top, dealers can cut it just as much and make more money... but wait! Someone can lower the price or raise the quality and make just as much money as before. So the guy who didn't lower price is now going to lose the market. It may be more insignificant that I think, but I don't know... Crossing the line of the supply and demand curve is usually a very significant event.

From the article, Apparently one of the reasons for the increase in production is the increase in price of opium. So not sure if that will mean an increase in purity or a decrease in price. Maybe more is getting caught so more needs to be smuggled.

the price of dope needs to come down IMO. right now it is very high and therefore people are more likely to cut their shit to increase profits. not to say when its cheap people wont step on their dope, but if there is a lot of supply of decent to good quality the prices will drop.

I may be wrong but usually cheaper drugs mean less crime because addicts dont have to hustle and rob as much to get their next fix.

Also if there is lots of good, cheap dope around people dont want to cut their shit cause better quality means more return customers and less hassle for a dealer.

A record opium harvest will probably mean purity levels in the UK should rise, but it's highly unlikely their will be a price reduction. Anyway, this is still great news for UK addicts. A few years back, a fungal blight destroyed massive opium crops leading to a massive drought - purity was low to non-existent. Sample batches revealed shit like paracetamol, trace amounts of codeine, etc. pretty much everybody in the UK was sick.

Yeah especially for drugs like morphine and codiene but aren't drugs like oxy and hydrocodone able to be made with not using any natural alkaloids now? i dunno but i have read that they can make OC and hydro drugs from all synthetic chems... i dunno though

^ afaik oxy/hydro -morphone/-codone are synthesized from morphine and codeine into more potent opioids. Other opioids like fentanyl, buprenorfen(sp?) suboxone, methadone and more are fully synthetic thus mimic the effect of opiates since they bind to opioid receptors however do not require opiate precursors to synthesize as do semi-synthetics
