Opioids Advice for wisdom tooth removal pain?

Hey Bluelighters, today I had my wisdom teeth removed. During the procedure I was given general anesthesia, the substances used to anesthetize me were diazepam, fentanyl, ketamine, and methohexital (Brevital sodium), all administered intravenously. For the pain I was scripted 10 5/325 Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen tablets, however these pills aren't really sufficient in eliminating the excruciating pain and soreness in my mouth. I do, however, have other opioids lying around, and recently insufflated 5mg of oxycodone in an attempt to achieve pain relief both stronger and faster than low-dose oral hydrocodone. My supply of strong opioids is limited unfortunately, and other than strong opioids I only really have access to low dose OTC codeine tablets, anti-inflammatories and NSAIDs, and ketamine. Does anyone have any advice for managing the pain my mouth is gonna be in for the next several days? If anyone does I'd appreciate your advice/tips.

It won't hurt for a whole week or anything, so I'd suggest just powering through it and not taking opioids if you aren't addicted to them. Save what you have for later in case you break a leg or something and they don't give you many pain meds. Just keep it clean and it'll stop hurting sooner

I know that ketamine is a potent dissociative that is commonly used alongside opiates for pain relief. I’m
Not telling you to take it. I’m just saying that’s what it is used for.

WTF?? I never even heard of anyone being given THAT kind of cocktail outside of major invasive surgery. I got my wisdom teeth removed with 1 dose of some sedative beforehand and 1 dose of I think morphine afterwards and that was that.

You were lucky, they game me some Ibuprofen and told me that will do :(
@ the OP @Electrum1 gave you some mighty good advice IMHO. 👍

I was also surprised with what they were giving me lol.

Yea that was definitely surprising hearing that list. For what it’s worth if you feel like you have to take an opioid, instead of taking more or extra .. take less and supplement it with ibuprofen & see how that helps. The ibuprofen will help with the inflammation which will help a lot (& in general ibuprofen is notorious for helping dental pain).

When i had my wisdom teeth taken out i was given percocet which didnt work well. Went back to the dentist and got demerol instead aka pethidine which worked well for the pain. They dot really script demerol much anymore though. I would just take the oxy

maybe they checked from the x-ray or the dentist was some other way able to determine it is exceptionally bad case. With local anesthetics, the pain was annoying for two days or like the first time, and second time I was really indifferent to it. Or maybe other way around.

As long as you don't develop dry socket, it should be good in few days, you don't need to scale your meds for so long.

I got 30 percocets and 80 vicodin.

It is sad nowadays. I was in my 20's and my wisdom teeth were causing me problems. I had them removed under anesthesia and this was before opiod crises.

I told the oral surgeon, I know I am a long haired guy who looks like a druggie, but I swear I don't even smoke pot.( which was true). I was a very heavy drinker, at the time.

I told him you came highly recommended but I am a whimp when it comes to pain.( not true anymore). What is the strongest pain meds you can give me he said percocet and this was when vicoden was schedule 3 and he threw in 40 vicodin with a refill.

110 pain killers. I miss the good old days. 30 percs and 80 vicodin. I had no tolerance to opiods. As far as the pain goes; I was a little nauseous from the anesthesia. He was a great oral surgeon.😁

I filled the perc and vicodin scripts at the pharmacy in the building the same day.
Refill on vicodin( which was only schedule 3 at the time) the next week.
I was shocked. I couldn't believe the pharmacy refilled so quickly, but very happy😊

Things were very different in the early 2000's. Also no real pain and no dry sockets

They just jacked 3 molars this afternoon, under local aneasthetic.

Afterwords he asked if I wanted painkilling meds [most lightly Ibuprofen and/ or Paracetamol].
Never inquired what he felt adequat/ was in his head, maybe he was thinking about a Opoid for all i know,
unlikely, but not impossible!

No thanks you no need to get some Ibuprofen prescribed i said, a bag of Kratom for if it gets painful will be sufficient.
He answered "great plan, Kratom is a good painkiller".

Huh. he knows about Kratom, a dr., he also didn t prescribe me preventive antibiotics either which is the general concensus
His collegue who worked on the other side of my jaw did, never took it off course.

advice: get Ginger, Sage, coiloidal silver, Garlic, good Honey, Oregano and whatever other mouth active safe anti-biotics there are. This will prevent at least in a non intrusive way inflammation. The good bacteria in mouth and intestines are not effected by them.

@Jnowhere , you hit a treasure, jealous. But ok global differences.

Advil or naproxen works really well and will help with inflammation. Sometimes when my body is hurting (ms) I find anti inflammatories work better than morphine/hydromorph

Same! :( What helped me most was definitely RSO (Rick Simpson oil) or really any thc/cbd combo in high-ish to high doses (at least 25mg 1:1 per dose)(my tolorence was high so I ended up taking like 500mgs per day) it also helps potentiate opiate analgesic properties. Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth.

I slept a week, drinking protein shakes as meals, a few times a day, and eat meals, and took the pills they gave me. I remember sleeping like 18 to 20 hours a day. It was blissful. Lots of sleepseems to resetted a lot of things, ay least over twenty years ago, when my wisdom teeth were removed.

Add some Kratom, we dont get opiods for dental things, or most other painful medical interventions. Happened one time when my collar bone broke and the doc prescribed Oxycodone. I was very graceful as that hurted.

But with Kratom an Weed you havecan medicate painrelief without having to take the shit dr's offer.

And it works better.

only local anestesia used here-novocaine,baicain or sort....place that u lived seems give opies like candies...never heard of such thing....except U>S or Canada, which are another planet

Lol when I got my wisdom teeth out they gave me 30 7.5/325 Vicodin with two refills. Man times have changed though. A few weeks ago I had a particular painful procedure they offered Tylenol 3 or nothing else. I told them I'd rather have hydrocodone as codeine stops me up. They said it was not possible. I laughed pointed at my bill of 6k and said you won't even give me two fucking pills?

Yea I'm going somewhere else next time. Just two hydros I would have been fine.

I don't use kratom but throughout the past week I've been using low dose codeine and weed for the pain, generally 16mg-51.2mg codeine phosphate with either 1000mg acetaminophen or 200-800mg ibuprofen depending on the severity of the pain I was in. For weed I was taking 10mg THC edibles and that synergized with the codeine quite nicely and worked really well for analgesia.
