ADHD: It’s the food, stupid

^ that's so short term, that it's not the diet imo. changing your diet will change your body chemistry, but over a very long term.

maybe you calm a bit when blood flows to the stomach to digest, or anything really (digestion is a complex process with a lot of hormones, that we can only begin to speculate about here). just a thought.

And if the doc is not too keen on the diet change then look for one that is willing until you find one.

Just watched a movie how at John Hopkins Uni they treat epilepsy with diet and how docs were more willing to do surgery than try the diet. It might be extreme but it often is like that. I mean what does epilepsy have with diet? I would never guess that diet alone can treat most cases.

Doing things the right way is almost always more difficult, often much much more.

It's easier to give the child a pill than change their whole diet pattern for some folks.

Maybe the other 1/3 just wasn't researched in the right way, not given the right food. Maybe it's even that like 99% of kids can be helped with diet alone.

I am a different person when I eat stuff that is good for me...minimal grains, no fake oils, no bread of course unless from nuts....lots of nuts, yolks, veggies, fatty meats, seeds. I keep proportions between the carbs fats and proteins and choose the meats, oils and carbs which are best for me, according to latest research and a Polish doctor whose books I have been reading.

When I go back to eating crap I feel like it definitely. My energy levels go down to 20% of what they were when eating right and life is just so much better and sunnier and more interesting. I can read easier, write easier when I eat well.

Never mind the physical stuff. I've been eating crap. Can't sleep at night, can barely walk on my one leg, have chronic pain faring up, stomach pain.

It all stops when food good for me is introduced.

How odd.

I definitely had ADHD when I was a kid, still do but now can make choices and get treatment for it, the right food. It takes hard work but its well worth it to get the most outta your life. Anyone I think can benefit from a diet change unless they are on top of things. So if you are sick, start with what you eat first. Experiment with different food. If you put crap into a car it won't run but if you keep putting good stuff in it it will work well for a long time. Try to help your food and slowly wean off the meds.

Pills are more profitable. So is surgery.

Health food and quackery are also highly profitable and are on the same level as tinfoil hat outrageous conspiracy theories about reptiles in credibility.

I'm pretty sure add and adhd represent the same disorder, the newest DSM only calls it AD/HD. ADD was the older term I believe

I don't think it has much to do with food... when I do speed/stimulants I don't eat *anything* for days on end, but have no problem paying attention.

The kids are bored to tears, it's that simple. It's the lame, worthless education they're getting... of course they aren't interested and can't pay attention. D'oh. It's not a 'disorder'.

Tell that to the countless scientific studies on it that find dopaminergic abnormalities that are somehow rectified by throwing more dopamine at it.

This is really good news.

Personally I prefer to use medication for my ADD since such a strict diet is pretty hard to follow 24/7, especially for a student, and it allows you to handle the symptoms only when you need to. It's just alot more convenient (Yes, I'm lazy, I plead guilty on this)

But if I have kids of my own that get diagnosed with AD(H)D I'd rather try something like this. It takes more effort than medicating your kid but if it works it's worth it. Drugs are a great tool for helping ADD (I wouldn't be able to apply myself to my studies to be a pharmacist without my trusted Ritalin lol) but children should be exposed to as little meds as possible imo. An added bonus is that it might also teach them to eat healthy, which can only be a good thing since apparantly there's more and more fat kids these days living on pizza, hamburgers and other crap (Again, I'm guilty of that too so I speak from experience)

I hope there're enough researchers and institutions taking this serious so that it'll become an accepted way to treat AD(H)D. Tho considering the public hysteria about 'the dangers of doping up kids with stimulant drugs' I'd imagine it'll get enough support ;)

Not again ..

Yes, healthy eating is on the same level as tinfoil hat conspiracy theories. 8)

Eating a diet that is free of foods so processed that they can barely even be called 'food', that sticks mainly to "whole" foods like fruits, vegetables, unprocessed meat/fish, and complex carb.s, that fills the bodys nutrition needs, avoids harmful toxins, preservatives, additives, and other unnecessary shit, is some ridiculous, far out there, crazy-people wacko nutjob shit to do. Only people involved in the 'healthy food racket' who want to convert you and your family to buy their evil 'health food' and make them rich, eat diets like that.

Nobody would ever eat 'health food' because its good for their body and is the food that the human body was designed to run on, and makes them feel healthy, energetic, full, and gives them more feelings of well being than eating the crap that passes for 'food' that so many americans eat all day every day.

It has nothing to do with wanting to feel healthy, maintaining a healthy weight, and actually ENJOYING eating that way, and everything to do with wanting to be superior and trick other people into the 'health food conspiracy'.

duh.

i've known this and have been eating organic with lots of vegetables and organic meats. but don't tell my psychiatrist that no one really has add, pills are fun :)

I can relate to this as when i was a kid i was ADHD big time , i used to have so much problems with it but what made it even worse was certain foods or drinks

I know you can think yeah but sugary drinks and sweets effect kids anyway , yes you are correct to a certain extent but to someone with ADHD the effects are alot worse

I wasnt allowed to eat things with certain E colorings in sweets or drinks cos i would just go loopy

My mum told me that one time when i was about 5 we were in town shopping and i got this fizzy drink as a treat, about 20 mins later we were in a clothes shop where my mum was trying clothes on in the cubicle when i suddenly rushed out and ran in to the street, i actually still have the memory of being in the main street wanting to push the green man button to cross the road, i had some mad desire to push buttons when i was a kid lol , so heres her half dressed in the changing room with me running out to a main street, the same day we went on the bus to go home and she said i was jumping all over the seats , running up and down the stairs to the upper level , jumping on other people on the bus and just plain crazy

Unfortunately at that time ADHD was not really known of, people just thought that i was a bad kid at school

This made most of my school life hell , it wasnt until many years later that it was recognized and my parents knew thats exactly what it was that was wrong with me

I wish they knew about it back when i was at school cos my life would of probably been a hell of alot better than it has been

There was one teacher at school who i loved, she knew something wasnt right with me but just didnt know what at the time as i said it wasnt recognized back then but when ever i got in to deep trouble she knew how to handle me properly , rather than giving me in to trouble she would sit and talk me down and give me the attention i needed to help me out

Im glad they are working on this cos it effects alot of kids

It doesnt matter if you just eat healthy, you also have to work out effectively so your body can use the nutrients correctly...

Im on add meds, and when i am in a healthy routine, and get enough sleep, I can pay attention as much as I want

but when im being unhealthy, everything just falls to shit and i can barely focus, which is when i take my medicine.

and i also like to use my adderall as an excuse to not try, which i believe many people do but don't like to admit.

being successful and in a good mood is definitely a balanced kind of thing, and you have to excell at everything you do if you want to excell at anything imo

God paying attention or finding anything interesting for long enough was a massive problem for me and still is tbh..

I get bored of things way too quick which has effected my relationships with girl friends also

But if the meds help with that i wish they were around while i was at school cos i used to go off in to day dreams or sit and doodle all day

In one year i was so bad that me and this other kid that i think had it also now that i look back used to sneak out of the teaching area and hide in the play area with all the toys until we got caught

I have worked on my diet for a long time, and my ADHD symptoms remain just as bad. I simply just believe that ADHD is being over-diagnosed, so that only one out of three diagnosed people probably have it, and two out of three may not, although this will vary depending on how clinicians diagnose people.

I just don't buy this explanation for why I have ADHD.

I have watched family members alter their diet for the better, and their symptoms did not improve either.
