ADDICTS ONLY: Is YOUR addiction a disease?

DonkeyPunch said:
I dunno, maybe I just see things differently than a lot of you guys, but I just think the whole disease thing is a big fucking cop out.

you have to be kidding me! your mind is almost totally overriden by the feeling of wanting to get high that you do just about anything to get your fix and you dont call that a disease? you think that can just be resolved with friends and willpower? are you fucking serious? there are MANY reasons people become addicted to drugs. if you dont resolve the issue or discover why then friends and willpower arent worth shit man.

i respect your right to an opinion DonkeyPunch, but its a joke that you believe a few friends and some willpower can conquer a serious addiction. i am fucking certain addiction goes far deeper than simply making the decision in your head wether to use or not.

sorry lacey!!!! <3

If YOU are a addict, or have been, i just got one simple question for you. And dont get it confused with "Is addiction a disease?" That one been done. I am asking AS a addict, Do you feel that you have a disease? I aint tryin to discriminate against no one, but the reason I only want to hear from addicts is that only they are qualified, IMO to say if they think bein a addict is a medical condition/disease. I think its funny, becuz so many "professionals" be like "They cant help it, its a disease!" and then the addicts be like "Uh...No.....I did it to myself..."

So I am asking ADDICTS and FORMER ADDICTS only, Only the ones who been thru it, DO YOU THINK YOUR ADDICTION IS/WAS A DISEASE THAT WAS CAUSED BY THINGS OUT OF YOUR HANDS WHICH YOU CANNOT CONTROL, OR IS IT DETERMINED BY YOUR OWN ACTIONS AND CHOICES?

I never met someone (other than those old totally brainwashed AA/NA heads whose like 35+) who was addicted to shit who honestly believed that they had a disease and were totally completely helpless against drugs/drinkig.I think its possible to feel like you had a genetic predisposition to it, addictive personality, whatever, but in the long run I think most ppl feel that they directed the path they chose, and their brain chemistry or whatever just added fuel to the fire.

So, Im askin yall what your answer to this question is and please give some explanation about why you feel that way, not just a one word answer. Just post how you personally feel about your own experiences and why you think you got that way, but keep it to bein about yourself not others. once again...This is not the "is addiction a disease" question. I only want to hear if YOU think YOUR addiction is a disease. Im sorry if i repeated that alot of times, but i wanna make sure its 100% clear what this thread is askin so it dont get closed for bein a repeat, becuz IMO these are 2 very different questions. Hope that makes sense, n im lookin forward to yalls responses. :)

Well I am glad we could do that for you. You seem like you need some kind of up-lift, and if you need to go trolling around on BL to get it, well, I hope that works out for you.

Oh I see you are banned. Godspeed.

It's not a disease, it's a decision! I have a hard time with the whole "disease model". You had a choice to use or not use, simple as that.

I'm sure it's been said on here numerous times, but addiction is by no means a disease. Calling it a disease is an insult to those with ACTUAL diseases such as cancer...they can't choose whether or not they want to be sick. An addict can and does make the decision to use, hard as it may be not to.

That said, I definitely believe in having an addictive personality that makes it harder for some to make the "right" decisions regarding addictive substances.
