Respect due.

A heroin addict won £3,000 in compensation after he complained he was mistreated in prison - and then blew it all on drugs when he was released.

The Government awarded the payout to Gerard George McBlain, a 31-year-old father of one, because he was denied methadone to wean him off heroin while he was behind bars.

After he used his winnings to buy diazepam, a Class C drug, his barrister, Richard Vandon, told a court: 'He was given £3,000 by the Home Office and he went out and spent the money - surprise, surprise - on the drugs he is now indicted with.'

But after he collected his compensation upon release last May, he immediately handed it over for a bulk buy of more than 8,000 tablets of the anti-anxiety medication.

At the Court of Appeal, Mr Vardon said it was hardly a surprise that a drug addict, when presented with a cheque for thousands of pounds, would spend it on more drugs.

I just hope they were genuine, wouldn't fancy spending that much on dodgy old roche's.

He got ripped off if he only got 8000 for £3k, you get about 10000 of them for <snip> .

3k on bloodly diazepam, what an idiot.

Sounds like bullshit to me anyway... Every addict I know, myself included once upon a time would of gone on a binge, bought an Xbox, air rifle, some more drugs, couple of pairs of trainers, drugs, remote control car, drugs, run out of money and sold all said saleable things for a fraction of the price for more DRUGS... Who the hell buys £3000 worth of diazepam, that's even less imaginative than an Xbox..!

interesting comment:

Every single heroin user I ever encountered had committed dozens of crimes before they'd ever gone near drugs. They are criminals who turn to drugs, not drug users who turn to crime.

Lol, that made me chuckle :)

This guy should have stuck with etis...

My experience usually consists of silly spending sprees while under the influence of benzos, not actually blowing all my money on the bleedin' things themselves.

Ah well, each to their own.

What a boring drug to blow so much money on. At least go with something fun like heroin or coke...

You should also note the line "he immediately handed it over for a bulk buy of more than 8,000 tablets " they were all over the pace in his house so I don't think the police know how many he actually purchased or even if he spent the whole £3000.

Definitely intent to supply though, in many ways not a bad move, getting caught with a shed load of Diaz has gotta be better than a shed load of brown.

Better to be caught with plenty diaz than with plenty brown/white, for sure. Legally at least. From a profit and/or pleasure standpoint it was a pisspoor choice though. Fella won't be winning The Apprentice anytime soon.

I wonder if we will see a repeat of this, but with different drugs.
