Hello, I hope I am posting this in the right place. If not I apologize. I have scoured the internet for an answer to this question and have pretty much failed miserably.

I take 20 MG Adderall XR once daily, as directed, for ADD. I have been taking it for 3 months now. The problem that intermittently occurs does not happen every day (or I would've flipped out and declared "give me something else, anything else!) or even often for that matter but it does happen from time to time and each time it leaves me baffled.

Sometimes when I begin to "come down" (and for fear of flaming and people declaring I shouldn't be taking Adderall if I get high from it let me explain that I don't mean "come down" as in my high wears off, I just mean when the effects begin to wear off) I intermittently have a very irritating side-effect. I feel like I'm not getting enough air in my lungs. Not, like, I "can't breathe," just that the amount of air that is getting into my lungs doesn't feel sufficient. Thus, I find myself yawning intentionally, taking excessively deep breaths, and coughing in an attempt to remedy the sensation. My breathing isn't "shallow" or anything, it just feels like no matter how deeply I inhale I'm still left wanting for oxygen.

I'm aware that this is one of the symptoms of an allergic reaction, but I don't believe that is the problem in this situation, as it is not a regular occurance and it only happens when the drug is wearing off, not when I first take it or at its peak.

I'm 29 years old, of a healthy body weight, with no real health problems. I do smoke, but not heavily (although Adderall does for some reason fill me with an intense desire to chain-smoke, no matter what, that I have to fight hard to resist.)

What I find especially peculiar about this side-effect is that, many years ago (like, when I was in High School and early college) I used to use cocaine recreationally. Not regularly, but often enough that I would consider myself relatively experienced with it, it was sort of our Saturday night thing for a while there.

The *same damn thing* would randomly happen when I would start to come-down off coke. Not every time, only occasionally, and only when I began coming down.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could cause this odd sort of a thing? Is it some kind of wierd anxiety thing? I have had anxiety & panic attack problems in the past, but I don't *feel* especially anxious when this happens UNTIL it happens. Then it's just so aggravating that I BECOME anxious, which only makes matters worse. A friend of mine mentioned that perhaps it has to do with how much/ what I eat during the course of the day, but I couldn't seem to find any rhyme or reason there either.

Has anyone had this happen to them with stimulants? Any more physiologically minded people have any thoughts on what might be causing it or how to remedy it? I'd appreciate it.

benzos. just don't use them every night. I've had the same problem before and I even have asthma so at times I thought it was my asthma but I realized it went away when I took an ambien or a benzo of some sort. My guess is it's an anxiety thing related to the adderall wearing off, I don't think it's all that uncommon either.

Amphetamine acts as a bronchodialator, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is from the excess of norepinephrine? Then those levels drop below baseline (normal, non-amphetamine levels) causing one to feel like they can't breathe as well?

*That's* an interesting possibility. But why only sometimes? Why not *every* time they drop back below baseline?

That *only once in a while* thing was what was making me lean towards anxiety or something psychosematic... but, like I said, I never actually *feel* particularly anxious *until* it starts to happen. At which point I get very terribly annoyed.

Which is why I wish I could figure out what makes it happen... so I can do/not do whatever it is i'm doing/not doing... So it doesn't happen anymore!

Benzos, but for fear of addiction I suggest some alcohol and indica marijuana

20 mg is a low dose tho, maybe your body doesn't react good to amps??

I have to take like 60mg to have a comedown.

That's the thing. It isn't really a comedown. It's just that randomly as the effects where off, I get that sensation. Maybe once every 10 times I take it. It's bizarre.

When I took adderall it was like that for me too at first (first 6 months or so). Eventually though I took them long enough to where every time it began to wear off I'd get more and more anxious. It got to the point where every time I was coming down from adderall (at any dose) I would have panic attacks (sometimes really bad), and eventually I just stopped taking it for good.

If you're able to get some, you can try taking a small dose of a benzo to help with the anxiety from the comedown when it happens. Other than that I'm not sure what you can do, because nothing I tried ever worked.

It's the chemicals in the adderall making you feel short-winded and all that other crap that comes along with it. I quit because the bad side effects far outweighed any good I was getting from it. For a lot people they never have bad problems like I had with it and you may not either, but the longer you take it for the worse it can get, I found out first hand.

Out of curiosity...

As I don't have any benzos currently, my next appointment with my psych isn't for another 3 weeks, and I can all but guarantee that if I try to call and ask for a klonopin script or something over the phone my doctor will order me to come in and hence I will have to pay an additional $40 copay....

Do you think opiates would work in the short term, in lieu of a benzo? Is that safe to do while adderall is wearing off? I shattered both my wrists in April and I still have a bunch of leftover hydrocodone, and my boyfriend randomly bought some opium at a music festival a few weeks ago which we've barely touched since...

The doc will probably give you klonopin because its not abused or as addictive as xanax or valium; it took me a long time for my doctor to trust me to perscribe me xanax for panic attacks (i dont take them everyday, thats no bueno)

The problem is that klonopin doesn't really work that great for me while coming off of adderall. It was too weak for it to help (for me personally)

Also I might suggest not smoking as much; I know that if I smoke alot (which I do sometimes because chain smoking seems natural while on it) my lungs feel "weaker' if you will and its a shitty feeling. This used to happen while doing mdma all night, the next day my throat would feel strange and not good. Try cutting down. Regular cigs kill me after a day/night of taking adderall so I smoke lights now.

Hydrocodone shouldn't be very bad against adderall, as long as your taking the adderall after you've come off.

Ive taken 25mg after my adderall has worn off and its made me feel like a million bucks.

I'm sure in low doses it wouldn't be too risky to take an opiate, if that's what would help you calm down. I wouldn't use opiates for that reason, but that's just me, doesn't mean someone else can't.

A small dose of a benzo that would kick in quickly like ativan (lorazepam) would be a lot better for anxiety brought on by the adderall comedowns though.

Other people may have other ideas and know more than I do though. That's just my 2 cents. Believe me though I know how bad adderall comedowns can be, they wreaked pure havoc on me. The only thing that ever helped me was a fast-acting benzo like ativan (klonopin is more subtle and doesnt kick in as fast for most ppl). Like I said I eventually gave up adderall for good though, got sick of the anxiety it gave me. Good luck to ya.

I only had troubles with breathing once and that was after a binge with no tolerance. Felt quite odd and very annnoying. As stated above ^ don't smoke so much! You'll get disgusting phlegm eventually.

For comedowns I go with alcohol or ghb and in extreme situations ketamine.

There's no need to turn to alcohol or opiates for comedowns from adderall if you don't have to. A small dose of a fast-acting benzo like I said is the best bet.

Try to breathe, drink some water & just relax and realize it's just the side effects of the adderall making you anxious, and nothing is really wrong with you. That's just simply what speed does when it starts to wear off.

If your only option is take an opiate or something though, then that's what you will do I guess. Just don't take too much, that's when it gets risky.

FYI - evidently I didn't make this especially clear (probably I was babbling...)

I just meant that, since the breathing thing doesn't happen all that frequently (who knows, it might not even happen *at all* between now and my next psych appointment in just under 3weeks) would an opiate be likely to work, without any adverse reactions, in lieu of the benzo's I don't currently have.

I'm definitly gonna mention the anxiety thing to my psych next appointment. I've been on both xanax and klonopin before for panic attacks and the like, so it seems reasonable that she'd give it to me again. I just haven't really had problems with anxiety and panic since college... until now.

Just as a much belated point of reference... For anyone who might stumbled across this thread in a similar situation... eventually, after the annoying breathing thing became too frequent and irritating, my psych switched me to IR twice a day instead of XR once a day.

This solved the problem 100%. Evidently my body just didn't get along well with some part of the control release mechanism, or the fillers, or god only knows what in the XR. All my anxiety or whatever was causing the breathing situation dissipated after I made the switch.

Individual body chemistry is just a weird thing I guess, but I like the IR better, regardless. I find they give me a lot more leeway in using them to appropriately suit my needs on any given day as my schedule is constantly in flux from 6 hour work days to 14 hour work days, and from easy mindless days to utterly detail-oriented days that would boggle my scattered mind without meds.

I think the IR is vastly superior if you prefer to use an ADD drug on an "as-needed" basis as opposed to mindlessly popping it in your mouth in the morning and praying it gets the job done for the necessary duration on that particular day.

Exactly. I'm going to have to close this, however, because it is more like a trip report anyway.

I'm going to change the title for it so its easier for people to find in the future. OP, PM me if you have any questions.
