ADDERALL AND RITALIN together?

friend takes 60mg adderall and 30 mg of ritalin a day...20mg/10mg together 3 times a day. What good is this mixture? Can someone explain to me how this might be? He's also on a bunch of other meds as well but I wondered mostly about the combo of adderall/ritalin together?

It's been a while since I've busted out this knowledge so I'm a bit rusty, forgive me fellow blue-lighters if I mislead; I'm only trying to help. Theoretically, they have somewhat contradictory effects, that is to say that ritalin might inhibit adderall's action a bit through its reuptake inhibition. Practically speaking, from what others have mentioned, they don't seem to cancel each other out to the degree one might assume, and the combined effects will be noticed.

It's worse for your heart, too. That's for sure.

That said, at the very least the good news is that ritalin has been shown (on BDD I am not quick to find & cite, sorry) to ameliorate to varying degrees dopaminergic neurotoxicity induced by adderall.

I imagine it would FEEL very much like a roller-coaster ride, heh. Ritalin's halflife is very short and I happen to find it does its thing and dissipates quite quickly, as opposed to adderall's elongated, more consistent action.

That said, I've never actually combined the two, though I have taken both separately. If you're looking for real-world experience from users of this combo, I can't help you, and can only offer the bump.

EDIT: the search function on this forum is very useful and I was certain I could find some older threads on the subject. Further reading:

At a glance I believe this corroborates much of what I said.

They are both stimulants that more or less have the same end result; more dopamine and norepinepherine in the synapses.

Euphoria, urge to socialize, self-confidence, elevated blood pressure and heart rate, appetite suppression, disinhibition, energy, are some of the things to be expected, depending on dose and tolerance.

You can actually use methylphenidate to negate amphetamine neurotoxicity via its actions on the DAT. MPH will stop the reverse-recycling of the DAT caused by AMP.

I have used both concurrently, and many are also prescribed this regimen -- it definitely has some weird effects. I remember getting abnormally irritable, possible something NE mediated.

doctors have been known to RX both adderall and ritalin together. my fiance's brother takes adderall in the morning, and 10mg of ritalin in the evening...but if ur taking this combo recreationally, it can be VERY uncomfortable and dysphoric, and dangerous...adderall and ritalin are both stimulants, yes. but they work on the brain in 2 totally opposite ways, adderall relases dopamine and serotonin...ritalin blocks reuptake up dopamine...if something is trying to release these chemicals, and u take something trying to block it at the same time , it is just recipe for disaster, dysphoria, extreme CNS stimulation, this is a very dangerous combo in my opinion, they are "RX DRUGS" however they are just as street as street drugs...a drug is a drug..be carefull...i dont reccommend mixing them

With all due respect, but doctors that co-prescribe methylphenidate (ritalin) with amphetamine (adderall) should be stripped of their medical license.

There is a risk of serotonin syndrome, and reuptake inhibitors such as methylphenidate (ritalin) are known to dull the effects of releasing agents such as amphetamine to great proportions. There is 0 clinical benefit from this combination.

Has anyone been prescribed both adderall and ritalin at the same time?

UGH SOUNDS AWFUL! I'd go ahead and take them on different days, and days apart in avoidance of Serotonin Syndrome. I've had it, it's fucking terrible and causes me insane anxiety attacks.

Be careful my friend.

i hate ritalin by itself, my body lost its positive effects years ago, u couldnt pay me to take it alone, it feels like hours of crashing with no euphoria.

Could you elaborate on the precise mechanisms by which this is possible?

Well in all and all since his doc thinks he suffers from ADHD....The combo really isn't that rare. Me and my doc are just now passing the threshhold of ADHD in my life....I see how it is a wonderful treatment for those who Just can't focus or all day stuck in there head thinking......He is prolly attacking it aggressivly and thats why he has that combo. All I need is 10mg methylphenidate four times a day and I'll be good. It may need bumped up later in life but for now. 5 mg twice a day only scratches the surface.

I would think it would be the same whether you took one of them or both of them, I believe they're both overall the same medication if I'm not mistaken. The effects of these types of medication (from my own experiences) were similar to snorting meth, it still gave me a rush and made me more energized just like meth does keep in mind they are amphetamines and basically all amphetamines usually have the same effects (this is if he's using it recreationally)
