This case series describes 3 patients who presented after snorting methoxetamine. Signs and symptoms on presentation included incoordination, ataxia, dysarthria, impaired consciousness, nystagmus, and severe cerebellar ataxia. In one case, the signs of acute cerebellar toxicity did not fully resolve until 4 days after admission. Toxicologic analysis of serum samples demonstrated the presence of methoxetamine in all three patients.
The authors suggest that methoxetamine exposure be suspected in any patient who presents with an acute cerebellar toxidrome.
Methoxetamine has been associated with two deaths in Great Britain. In April, the import and sale of methoxetamine in the U.K. was banned for 12 months.
