Actors You've Seen A Million Times But Never Knew The Name Of... Until today!

This thread is amazing.

I have informed a couple people of what John C. Reilly's name was in the past. I remember reading this interview with him when he was promoting Talladega Nights about all of the movies he's been in, doing supporting/character roles, and he can still walk around on the street unrecognized. There must be something both awesome and kind of disappointing about that.

I was thinking about this, & whilst I'm sure all of them would've loved a shot at the big-time, in terms of job security in the notoriously fickle Hollywood, they're completely sorted. If you look at their listings on IMDB they've done inordinate amounts of work, & don't have to teeter on the knife-edge of being cast aside as the next young Hollywood starlet ascends the throne.

Very true, PinholeStar. Guys like John C. Reilly and William H. Macy will always be able to get roles; Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan, probably not so much.

Gary Oldman

Phillip Seymour Hoffman
He's becoming more and more known due to his acting ability and picking great scripts(not so much the latest MI movie)but he's still not even close to being a household name.

Maybe five years ago, but come on, he just won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005.

Catherine O'Hara

She's been in so many movies -- best known to me as the mom in Home Alone -- such as Beetle Juice, Orange County, A Series of Unfortunate events; guest starred on the show Six Feet Under; did voices in Over the Hedge, Chicken Little, The Nightmare Before Christmas. I could never remember her name though!

I didn't realize she was the mom in Home Alone until last weekend when I caught some of it on TV. I know her best from Christopher Guest movies. Sure flow...sure flow...

Robert Carlyle

I know this Scottish actor best for his great role as the obnoxious drunk Begbie in Trainspotting, then saw him again in a starring role in 28 Weeks Later. Apparently he is bigger in Europe (I notice many of his credits are from European films), but he is far from a household name here in the United States.

Yeah, and I got dissed for putting William H. Macy in the thread! :\

That woman who always plays such a convincing bitch:

Beth Grant

Off the top of my head I can think of Donnie Darko, Little Miss Sunshine, The Frighteners, A Time to Kill, among others.

That's a really good one.

I wonder if casting directors have a rolodex section (or something more technologically advanced:)) with "convincing bitch" as the heading, and her name first on the list. :)

J.K. Simmons

To me, he will always be the Nazi skinhead who burned a swastika into another man's ass (as Vern Schillinger in HBO's OZ series), but Simmons has done a ton of other TV and films. Some include: Spiderman 2 and 3, Law and Order, Thank You For Smoking, The Ladykillers, etc. I also just saw him in a preview for the film Juno, where he plays the pregnant girl's father.

You're kidding, right? Please tell me you are joking.

=D I could seriously hear the disgust in your voice when I read that.

But even a COMPLETE non-movie buff like me is laughing at a lot of the actors listed in this thread. If they're A-list enough to be award winning and have had significant roles in movies which were in the top 10 when they were released, I really don't think they belong in here...

^^
The point of this thread isn't "who belongs here" so much as it is "who I have seen over and over again, but never knew the name of". So, it makes sense that a-list and/or award winners are being named here... it just surprises the hell out of me that some people really don't know who Gary Oldman or Danny Aiello or Phillip Seymor Hoffman are.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is hilarious to me.. considering his role in boogie nights :)

wikipedia & imdb are my best friends if i dont remember a name exactly. i always remember faces..

Kathryn Erbe from Criminal Intent and Oz was in What About Bob? LOL
