Acne Mega Thread

The products used on that website are pretty much what my Dermatologist prescribed to me as well.

The thing that bothered me was the cleanser he first prescribed. The regular anti-bacterial Cetaphil cleanser was too irritating for my skin. They make a gentle cleansing one as well.

I was skeptical at first but it made my skin glow

My acne is highly related to my stress and my cleanliness.

Touching your face, bad.

Even special face soaps proved counterproductive for me.

Now I just rub my face with my clean hands in the shower, and thats about it.

this was also how i did it in the beginning, but after a while it would breakout even while doing that, so i went to go pick up some of the stuff wesmdow was talkin about and that fixed it up quick... and i only use it like once a week

yea fuck cetaphil cleansers, even the gentle one is loaded with so much sodium lauryl sulfate. Its screaming skin irritant. 99% of the cleansers out there are like that. Sometimes i feel like not bothering *sigh *
goddamnit i want my old skin back

nizoral.

its hairloss/anti dandruff shampoo.
Put it on your face, I learned this from a steriod user at my gym. :P

Interesting thread... I don't have much acne in the face, but my nose has been filled with black dots for years. I had some acne when I was a teenager, but it's pretty much gone. I just wonder what I could do for my nose, it really annoys me. What annoys me the more is my neck. I have a lot of acne, some little balls and black dots at the end of both of my ears, and it just refuses to go away. Would the method some people gave here work for that? Or should I see a dermatologist? I would like to get rid of this. I am a bit shy to go to the pharmacy and to buy cleaners and cosmectic stuff because it seems like it's just for woman. 8(

BTW, I heard shaving can cause acne. It seems to do that to me. I usually shave before taking my shower. My father told me it was a bad thing to do, because it gives acne. Is it true ? When should I shave and how? Wish I had a more clean face...

I'm female and don't shave my face, but I know that shaving after you shower (or soak your face with a warm towel) is better because it softens the hair, opens the follicles, and 'primes' your face. I don't think it would actually cause acne, but it can irritate your face which could be a starting point for the acne to develop.

I was quite prone to pimples when I was between the ages of 12-18. I'm now 24 and still get the odd pimple but never really any of those big red ugly looking ones.

Things I believe cause me pimples these days are, not changing pillow cases regularly, smoking, exercise sweat to name a few.

I've always had horrid acne [about 10 years now].

I've used several OTC and four or five different Rx topical meds, some antibiotic pills, don't consume any sugar, get plenty of exercise, etc. etc., all to no avail, all this time.

All I can say is, it sucks! But I couldn't get a girlfriend even without my recurring skin problems, so I guess it doesn't really matter :)

Definately made me sensitive when I was younger tho .. my mom had to drag me to the Doc, I didn't want to talk about it.

here is the bottom line with food. food does not cause acne the doctors are right - but it does have an affect on the acne. they play with word so much which makes it sounds like food has nothing to do with acne which cant be further from the truth.

ok you now how acne is red and inflammed?? that is inflamation because of bacteria and all that. If you reduce inflamattion the severity of acne will be severly decreased. you can reduce inflamation just by your diet. omega 3 fatty acids is what i have used. i have never had inflamed acne since i started taking omega 3 (fish oil). so it has permanently reduced the severity of any acne.

there are so many factors that help with healthy skin. i think the approach u have to take into consideration is to realy respect the health of your body. you have total control over what goes into it.

look atwhat causes acne?? u know what is in ther sebum?? its cholesterol and fats. it looks like cheese. i mean the most obvious thing to do is to reduce animal fats.

ever since i began eating foods based on thier nutrition and not taste my acne has imroved so much.

When I stopped eating sugar, my acne-problem where reduced by like 50% within a month or so. It did not completely vanish though, but as I said it was very much reduced. Dairy also make acne worse, so stay away from milk and all products made from milk.

I've had good luck using cetaphil cleanser once a day in the afternoon.
I also take minocycline twice a day and shower twice a day, using a washcloth compress on my face.
a good balanced diet, sufficient sleep and exercise are all crucial to attractive skin as they are to a healthy body in general.

although not directly related to acne.. for general skin care I thought I should still bring up using sunblock. anyone subjected to prolonged sun exposure should PROTECT THEIR FACE! sunblocks with higher SPF are generally better. I use a neutrogena with a 50 SPF. it is expensive but very light and non-clogging, in addition to providing my skin with excellent UV protection. there are lots of sunblocks with scents and oil and garbage in them.. these are usually low SPF and so you have to glob tons on your face to get any real sun protection.

I also wonder how beneficial it is to use aloe vera gel? whenever my skin gets irritated or dry I put a bunch on my face. I think this works well and smooths skin as long as it has no alcohol in it.

but like others said, if you take good care of your body, don't touch your face and keep a positive attitude, your acne should be contained regardless of genetics.

I used to have bad acne probably between 14-17,18 years old. Now (19, almost 20) I have had minimal acne (maybe 4 small pimples a month). The only thing that I changed was my lifestyle. I got out of the house and was phsyiclly active. Another big thing is to take AT LEAST 2 SHOWERS A DAY. Be generally clean. Its very important. Clean your face using a non-soap cleanser (I really like Aveeno - Naturall radiant cleaser or something like that) and NEVER touch your face. Clean/switch your pillowcase and sheets every week.

If you do these things, I guarentee you will see results in 3-6 months.

If all else fails try complete body detoxification.
My understanding is that acne is caused by;
toxins in the body resulting in bad skin and/or stress.

As stated a lifestyle change may be in order. I recommend:
Using a shower filter. Cleaning the face with natural-made cleansers, no chemicals. Sweating in an infrared sauna. Drinking lots of pure water.

If all this doesn't work (which it will) then you should look at reducing stress.

Cleansing the body and cutting out all processed food will do wonders. Expensive, but worth it in the long run.

Use Proactiv, best thing out there imo. Another thing I've noticed is that general health effects it a solid amount. If i've been lounging around doing nothing, but playing poker and getting high with my profits (my winter break basically) that whenever I had a solid lack of exercise cigarettes would make me break out. On the flip side if I've been sleeping well, working out or running atleast on occasion, and smoking lots of weed (gotta keep the mind healthy too ;), and even cigs it really is much better.
