SWIM inherited three morphine cassettes (5g in 250ml water) from a friend who just died of cancer. After evaporating ended up with 15 grams of pure morphine sulphate powder. For the curious, SWIM opened the cassettes and poured the contents into three large pyrex baking dished and baked in the oven at 95c until dry then scrapped up the crystals with a single edge razor blade then mortar and pestle to a fine powder. SWIM IV'd 30mg and absolutely hated the histamine effects (pins and needles, itchy, itchy, ITCHY)
SWIM then asked a chemist friend to order 500ml of acetic anhydride for him. His friend asked him what he wanted it for and he told him it was to experiment with paper making. I think his friend knew EXACTLY what SWIM had in mind to do. With shipping, hazardous materials fees, etc., the half liter was $100.
SWIM took 300ml of AA (as it turned out WAY too much) and dissolved the MS in a 1 liter Buchner flask with a rubber stopper with a hole in the middle to accommodate a thermometer. He covered the vacuum port with a wet piece of cloth taped around it for a vent. He then heated it outside on an electric hotplate, watching the temperature and keeping it at 85c for about 5 hours agitating it every 5 to 10 minutes.
The problem with too much AA now became evident as the drying time was now going to be excessive. The AA needed to be diluted with 900ml water so SWIM had to buy more pyrex baking dishes! The dilution changes the AA to Acetic Acid solution (no longer useable to convert morphine) and will just be evaporated off. Now back in the oven and the temperature kept below 95c to re-crystalize. The layer of liquid should be kept thin so the evaporation process is quicker.
I am looking for others who have experience with acetylation and ways to improve this process and the end result. SWIM also has cancer of the throat and can now easily obtain the pure morphine.
