acetone substitute for Coke HCl Purification?

ok, im going to try the method of purifying coke listed at the end of thisthread. Ive found a lot of contradictive posts on this board and Im seeking a tried and true method, so please only respond if you have first hand success.
Ive been hearing some negative things about the harshness of acetone... are there better non-polar substitutes that can be utilized in this technique? Availibility of solutions to a layman?
Also, Im planning on doing an ounce... of course ill do a small amount first as a tester, but with a larger amount what must be changed in this technique? what is a good maximum batch?

I'm assuming you're talking about recrystallizing your stuff ?

You could possibly do an A/B extraction a la standard organic chemistry procedure...

Or simply recrystallize it .......

hmmm, the thread worked before but seems to have disappeared!

Well, Im looking for a simple, tried and true method of purifying about an ounce. Id prefer the one step conversion but I guess I can make it into a freebase and then back again. Im not experienced with chemistry processes so obviously id like to keep it simple and safe.

Ive searched all the threads and they are very contradictory. Please eleaborate if you have a tried and true method, as well as the answer to my first question!
 
ive just heard that acetponeaves a nasty taste in the purified product, which another product possibly might not do?
