This is more for informational purposes (if anyone were to do this in the future). It was NOT done intentionally and is not recommended!
The person who did this normally makes their own saline starting with 500 ml bottles of sterile distilled water, adding 4.5 NaCl (lab grade). By mistake a 10x bottle of PBS (phosphate buffered saline - Ca2+/Mg2+ free) was grabbed (identical bottles - missed the label) and the sodium was added to this. This stuff should have been diluted 10-fold before even being used - and it is not made for injection purposes. I don't even want to know what the osmolarity and tonicity of this solution ended up being, but it couldn't have been good!
A total estimated volume of 20 ml was injected intravenously. Immediately after the shot, actually during administration a sharp headache started. This was followed by nausea and general malaise over the next 20 hours. The person survived this stupid incident with no known permanent damage, but it is not recommended as a substance for iv use!
