My girlfriend went to Europe last semester and bought a bottle of Absynth. It's a green liquid, that has hallucinogenic properties. I was wondering if any of you guys have taken this before and could tell me what it does to you, how long it lasts, what is the trip like. Just basica information. How much is good to take. Whatever you can tell us, even if it was from a friend who has taken it, would be greatly appreciated.

i haven't ever done it, but i have done extensive research on it as far as producing it yourself, history of it in the US and europe, and what exactly it does.
absinthe is still legal in several european countries such as andorra, ibiza, spain, the uk, and the czech republic as well as a couple of asian countries. it was banned mostly because of people doing idiotic things while on it. it was really really popular among artists. it is believed that van gogh was under the influence of it when he cut off his ear. oscar wilde was also said to be a famous absinthe drinker.
basically what causes the effects of it is this herb called wormwood. in large quantities, it can be highly toxic. this is why people are advised against synthesis of absinthe as in concentration, it can induce death...especially if you use oil of wormwood as it is highly concentrated. you can have it shipped into the US, but i would advise against it as it is illegal.
as far as the effects of it, i have had friends who have drank it before while they were in europe, and they said it has an almost opiate like effect. i guess sort of like smoking opium, but definitely not to the extent of something crazy like heroin. has hallucinogenic properties when drank in a little bit of quantity. also it has an extremely high alcohol content. drinking anything with a lot of wormwood on it can cause renal failure, so beware of that.
it also is said to taste like licorice since it has a lot of anise in it. it is chartreuse in color. a legal version of absinthe with a lowered alcohol content ixnay the wormwood is Pernod. it is drank with a sugar cube and accompanied by an absinthe spoon. there is a lot of history with absinthe also that circulates around new orleans. it's highly involved with gothic culture too. very interesting stuff.
some people try and make it themselves by steeping wormwood in vodka or pernod, which is horrid tasting according to many sources. it has to be distilled in order for it to be fully effective, anyway. like i said, i don't recommend making it. the best thing to do if you want to try it is go to a country where it is legal cuz you don't want to die due to someone being stupid and distilling it improperly.

a version of absinthe is avaible in the UK, have drunk it on a few occasions, but i don't think it is actualy 100% proper absinthe.
I know Prague is well knwon for purchasning it, as everyone i know who has visited prague has made mention of absinthe and drunken nights.
But I nor anyone else i know has ever had the so called absinthe experiance of hallunations. Just got drunk. :S
 
If it has Hallucinogenic qualities then i think it belongs in the psychedelic forum.

gangsta guy - which absinthe have you tried? i recently bought a bottle of sebor absinth. luverly green liquid - i've got drunk on it - very drunk - but never tripped. quite speedy i thought - that could be at least partly due to the aniseed.
the level of thujone (active ingredient of wormwood that can be dangerous) is limited in this, - i think there are commercial guidelines for this.
 
Absinthe is not illegal in Britain, and has become quite popular recently. Hill's is one of the most popular brands in the UK and is shit according to most absinthe lovers.
The psychedelic effects of absinthe are little if any and are probably not due to the minute amount of wormwood in each bottle. Customs officials usually think that smuggled absinthe is just wine. Busting people with liquor is not high on their list of priorities. Absinthe can usually be mail ordered with no problem from customs.

my friend drank half a bottle of absinthe (hills) and was horribly drunk and then threw up her stomach lining and was ill for several days after.
i've tried it but not in large quantities, i found it like being very drunk and stoned at the same time, which is actually not very nice in my opinion... dizzy, blurry etc... it IS quite funny, i got the giggles, but no proper trippy effects at all.
it tastes disgusting and gives you a b*st*rd of a hangover so try it just for fun but don't get too excited about it!

While in Prague a few months ago I had many a night with absinthe. If your looking for the psychedelic properties go elswhere, altho it does seem to be a little different than another drunken state, their is so little difference that it is probably psychosomatic. However the whole ritual with the sugar is fun, and it's not a bad drink if you buy a decent brand.
 
If you wanna good report on Absinth try Maxim magazine. They did a story on it in one of their early issues (a little less then 2 years ago). It had a very in-depth trip report on its effects.

I really think the “hallucinogenic “ properties of thujone ( the psychoactive chemical in wormwood) have been blown out of proportion. If you take it on it’s on the effects are only mild, even in high doses. In some readings I have done there has been a certain amount of speculation that some of the more bizarre effects described in the early 1900’s that prompted it’s ban were due to the heavy metals that were added to the European varieties of the drink to give it’s green color. Wormwood, can be a bit toxic and is not a great thing to ingest on a daily basis, but is OK given controlled use. Ethanol is extremely neurotoxic, carcinogenic and addictive however, and outweighs the dangers associated with woormwood.
 
The absinthe you can by in the U.K. will not make you trip unless drunk in huge quantities (enough to blow your liver out from the alchohol first). There's a legal limit to how much extract of wormwood can be in absinthe sold here, and it's tiny. I've tried four different brands and found all to just get you very pissed, very fast. It does have a nice taste (somewhat acquired though) and is preferable to a lot of other spirits if getting drunk is your thing.
