Abstaining from television watching

I went about 4 months without turning on my TV at all. Maybe 6. Also no shows. Maybe a movie here and there on my laptop. I was never bored, although that may not be directly because of no TV.

My LCD recently died... So I haven't had TV for about a month, or so. Bought a computer monitor. I watch a lot of Amazon instant video.

im afraid i watch WAY TOO MUCH....im addicted to amazing race...survivor...big brother...etc..

i can feel the brain cells dying...

fuck the brain,it aint good for your cardio vascular system.... theres plenty people alive with dead brain,in fact most people I see around, but there aint single motherfucker with busted heart walking on earth

I've been pondering this idea for months now.

T.V. is more addictive than heroin...justs lasts as long as you like and it's EVERYWHERE.

Call me crazy but the government/ad companies are brainwashing us all with subliminal messages, overstimulaiton, etc etc.

It's bad for your health and i WILL quit.

I will not abstain from netflix however.

How much TV do you watch?
I watch what I would think is a reasonable amount of TV I think usually maybe around a couple of hours a day. The bulk of my watching tends to happen around mealtimes or late at night though where I stream things and watch them on my laptop.

Do you feel stupider after watching TV? What about long uninterrupted sessions?
It really depends on what im watching, if im watching something really mindless like Jeremy kyle than yeah it does sometimes feel like I can feel myself wasting away. But if im watching something like a documentary or even sometimes cartoons like south park or the simpsons or a film like django unchained for example I actually feel like i'm actually learning something and becoming more intelligent.

What are some healthier alternatives? Interesting, unique ones! (besides exercise and reading).
Well you've said the big two already, which I also do but theres also perhaps try being a bit creative, I like to learn how to draw quite a lot. Theres a brilliant site actually called dragoart which can teach you how to draw just about anything and then after you've followed a few of those tutorials you have the basics to work with to create your own pieces :)
Also maybe a slightly strange one but video games are always good fun, theres also been several studies which show playing can actually help you learn and react faster and also make faster real life decisions. Just in case you really needed an excuse to play :p In the words of Jesse Pinkman "YEAH, SCIENCE BITCH!"

I believe frequenting forums is a much better alternative to watching TV.
i

I agree. I don't even think of the boards as an alternative. For me, sitting on the couch watching tv is the alternative. I'd rather be here reading.

How much TV do you watch?

I watch television for an hour after dinner but actually it is the time when I hang out with my husband. He watches television like he might miss something. I watch tv with him in the evening just so he won't spend ALL his time alone.

I can't do long sessions of television. I've gotten so used to watching programs without commercials that I end up in a really bad mood from from the long commercials strung together... it feels like there are as many minutes in a commercial break as there are minutes of actual show. I have the first two seasons of Big Bang Theory on iTunes. I can watch three episodes in an hour instead of two because the actual show lasts only 20 minutes. I can watch two hours of television programming as long as there are no commercials. Even after two hours of commercial free fun, I'm sated and ready to do something else.

I prefer music. I would rather have music playing and do something. Even if it's cleaning the kitchen, as long as I have music to listen to, that's more fun to me than watching regularly scheduled programming. I don't like to HAVE to sit down at a certain time to watch a television show. If the premise interests me and the characters entertain me, I want to watch that show when I have time in my schedule to sit down and watch it... I don't like having the television tell me when I need to be sitting down looking at it.

^^Reading is great for your brain and definitely benefits your attention span. I'm always caught on my reading assignments at school because I enjoy it. TV is like the exact opposite it kills my attention span....especially netflix lol.

^^Lol.....well it probably stimulates more chemicals in your brain than t.v......and it all depends on how long you last :)

I'm not above watching TV while I eat or cook; I actually like to do so. Other than that, I typically download complete shows instead and watch them little by little. I don't "keep up" with current series on the tube. Even if forums are more engaging than watching TV, screen time is still screen time so I attempt to limit it.

I don't own a television set nor pay for cable.

I've been enjoying re-reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. %)

The Fountainhead is better :p

how long what last lol.... I am very picky about porn and hate revisiting old pieces,so I often just scroll trough the matrix of low quality pron looking for some good piece,it takes me sometimes hour or two

I watch too much TV when I am living unhealthily... Working too much, not sleeping well, not exercising. When I am more active ad feeling better about myself I watch less. Funny how it works.

I remember reading a thread on here years ago where someone asked what was the most visual psychedelic without any body high or mindfuck. The answer was TV.

Its also incredibly addicting. I watch recordings of Dish Earth. RIP

The Kardashians with a freind sometimes. Kim is hot

interacting with people in real time, be it on a computer screen or not, is always going to be superior to the cognitively numbing repetitions of predefined social scenarios, subtle political rhetoric, manufactured cultural bias, and subliminally manipulative scripted social behaviors derived from television shows. plus you can escape the sick social engineering phenomenon that is commercial advertising (to a degree).
