WhiteRabbit4 said:i dont think that was real absinthe, atleast if it was bought in the US. There are a ton of imitators out there, i've drank cheap US imitations before. but, i had a friend who a couple of years ago ordered a bottle of real absinthe from europe. he said it was absinthe orginial, which is supposedly genuine czech absinthe. he and a friend drank i believe it was 2 or 3 shots with a sugar cube in it and they were wayyy fucked up. definite pyschedlic affects, mad visuals and everything.
ive been thinking of ordering a bottle myself...pretty expensive though.
this is a perfect example of something terribly wrong with forums....good god get your information correct before posting ANYTHING
one thing you got right is that in the poor old US all you suckers can buy is absinth(e) without the wormwood ingredients. all this stuff is, is well, high proof alcohol with an odd anise (licorice-type) flavour to it....nothing more.
now real absinth(e) (with or without an e, depending on the country of origin) can come from switzerland, czech, and a few other countries in europe, as well as a few brands that are made here in canada. these ones (unless specifically made as one without wormwood) are the real stuff, although not quite up to the levels of some ingredients they used "back in the day." there are limits set by the EU and i think by canadian laws too that limit how much thujone can be in the absinth per ml, and this limit in both places is definetly less than the stronger varieties from back when.
absinth has definetly also gotten a raw name for itself, and a raw deal in getting that name. many ppl associate it with what this post was about...."mad visualz d00d" trippy hallucinations, ppl going crazy and losing their mind blah blah blah. the largest reason for any of the craziness and mind losing is just the high alcohol content. as we all know, any person who drinks large amounts of high proof liquor will get, well, drunk and out of control. this isn't the thujone speaking, especially not today. if one was to drink enough absinth from anywhere today, they would more than likely be dead from alcohol poisoning before they started to get "1337 m4d visua1z d00d"....although i have heard that drniking it days on end makes the thujone build up in your system, eventually causing some hallucinations and other wierd effects. But drinking it one night, will NOT give you crazy visuals and nuts hallucinations, it just won't. people who tell you that are crazy, lying, or plain wrong. Eurotrip, just like everything else in hollywood and the media today, blow things out of proportion and incrase our society's fear of drugs and everything mind-altering; exactly what the gov't wants (the us one anyways)
enough ranting about the states though...my point was this:
absinth today (i just bought a czech bottle of it and have drank it, and i DO know what the effects are first hand) is a bitter tasting drink with mild non-alcholic effects. I would say the best description has already been mentioned earlier; a clearer and almost "better" drunk. you still feel drunk, but you feel a lot clearer minded and better, u almost feel like you aren't nearly as drunk as you really are....but your body and speach and whatnot says your drunk, you just feel less drunk and more alert....i'd akin it to, i guess, a low dose of speed with alcohol maybe....its fun though i love it
although the taste leaves something to be desired unless mixed with coke
this is where it gets interesting. mixing it wth coke potentiates the thujone by almost 3x....this gives the opportunity to get a little more "fucked up." having said that, it STILL isn't strong enough to get acid or mushroom like visuals going at all, its just a little weird is all. thats something that people seem to not understand.....most drugs are very unique and cannot be "akined" to another drug or combo of drugs. first of all, a combo of drugs may act VERY differently than one would think they would by their effects alone. there are things that act very differnt when taken with other things.....but even considering that....lsd is lsd, you can't say that a drug is like lsd, it isn't....lsd is very unique. so are mushrooms and a lot of other things. sure there are other hallucinagens, but most aren't "like" lsd, they may have similar effects in that they make you hallucinate or hear things or whatever, but the actual hallucinations and feelings you get and many other factors are often VERY different from other drugs; not just with lsd either, but very many drugs out there cannot be compared to others, simply because they are that different.
