If someone has a abscess from a missed shot from shooting pills (For the record I don't I'm just curious in case it ever happens) if you drain the abscess and get the pus out is that enough the clear up the infection or do you also need to take oral antibiotics?

I would try Cypro, if not, Amoxicillin if not, ER.

He told you two anti biotics and told you to go to er.... If that doesn't help you nothing will.

I asked if draining the abscess with a needle and getting the pus out is enough to make the infection go away, without taking antibiotics.

Keeping a hot compress on the injection site will often cause it to come to a head, burst, and drain on it's own. This is not intended in any way to suggest that you not seek medical attention for an abscess but I(and many others) have successfully drained abscesses this way without resorting to lancing it.As to whether or not anti-biotics would be needed,it depends a lot on how deep the abscess is,where it's at and how long you've had it before it drains.Obviously keep it clean and apply a dressing once it bursts and drains.Hopefully this helps answer your question.

youmay need more than just oral antibiotics for some Abcsesses. I had an abscess in my ankle from shooting heroin in a bathtub at a motel (yea the dirty water caused an infection) I was completely nieve with abcesses, so after day 4 of a hard lump, it grew to the size of a half dollar or a bit bigger, was purple,. and puss started to leak out, I was admitted to the hospital for 3 days, I almost needed plastic surgery..the wound was as deep from my one ankle bone almost reaching the other side of my ankle, they said if I waited a few days longer that my foot would of needed amputation, whenever an abcess forms,. go to the ER IMMEDIATELY to get it cut off and have some antibioics administered before it gets worse..its not a joke or anything to try to cure on ur own....

Just curious, what did they do at the hospital if you were a heroin addict, did they make you go through withdrawal or did they give you methadone or morphine to prevent withdrawals?

wow, i just lost my left arm because i didnt seek medical help soon enough. if you get an abscess you certainly need to go to the er. docs dont so much care why youre there, dont get me wrong here, you aint gettin any opiate pain meds when they hear youre an addict but they will give you anti-biotics and possibly drain it. seriously if you notice any symptoms of infection, head to the doc, i didnt, now i have one arm. think about it???

The answer is no, draining an abscess will not remove all bacteria, etc in the wound. You need to take antibiotics even if your abscess is drained.

If the abscess is superficial, it may clear on its own. But from a harm reduction standpoint any abscess should be looked at by a medical professional. The abscesses I am referring to are usually only from "skin popping". Shooting IV is a deep process, likely a deep abscess.

And if you are inpatient, they certainly need to give you pain relievers. What hospital I would love to know would allow you to detox out of the blue? At the hospitals I worked at, if a patient came in for any reason, in active addition, there were protocols. If you have severe pain, yes you will get opiates. Otherwise, they put you on the detox protocol, usually clonidine, librium and such.

They don't just let u suffer.

If someone knows of somewhere they do, I would like to know about it.

the hospitals ive dealt with are all va. they have only prescribed opiates twice to me in like 15 years because they know im a junkie. i also cant get benzo's from my shrink.

Depending on the abscess, you may just need antibiotics, or it may need to be sliced opened, drained, and perhaps even packed with gauze(tamponnage), along with having the pus analyzed to make sure you're on the right antibiotics. This isn't really a junkie-tech type treatment you can do at home. Don't fuck around with it.

IF you are lucky you can get by with oral antibiotics. Some abscesses require MONTHS of IV antibiotics, thru a PICC line. I got one (abscess) earlier this year, I took an exacto knife and sliced it open, biting down on a wet washcloth. Best believe if I had insurance I would have gone to the ER. I was lucky, no nerve, muscle or skin damage, but it was excruciatingly painful (both the incision and the swelling: my arm swelled to twice its normal size). I was not able to procure any antibiotics. Most missed shots will go away on their own, ive probably hit myself 10,000+ times, but that 1 in 10,000th shot might require medical intervention. I realize the stigma attached to going to a doctor for a missed shot, however it's better than losing a limb. I was within hours of going to the ER, and had I had a gun, I probably would have put a bullet in my brain the pain was so bad. Fortunately it popped, and drained for an entire day. If I had a job at the time, I would have lost it for sure; not like you can walk around with a towel wrapped around your arm and not draw atention to yourself.

Hey, I recently had an abcess myself and as did my boyfriend. He has had few actually. Mine ended up being fine and went away on its own without draining or anything but I think that I was super lucky. My boyfriend though, wasn't as lucky. I tried and tried and tried to convince him to go to the Dr but insisted that he would not. SO, if you aren't under any circumstances going to go to the dr (even though you should), we have found that the best way to deal with it is to apply heat. This helps bring it to a head faster and the faster it comes to a head the quicker it will start to drain on its own. DO NOT POKE AT IT OR LANCE IT OR DIG AT IT. Let it NATURALLY drain on its own...and if its a true abscess then it will. Keep applying heat and it will. BUT, one more tip, after if does begin to drain naturally DO NOT CONTINUE TO APPLY HEAT. Applying heat after its started to drain actually will breed more infections. Even though the draining part is gross and disgusting, its your body's way of getting out the infection. If you have a fever, take tylenol (as directed of course). You might still have a fever for a while after the abscess begins to drain. BUT if you still have a fever multiple days after its started draining, then you should REALLY get to an ER. Just some wisdom from my experiences with it.

I had an abscess that damn near cost me an arm.I was honest about how I got it by missing with a speed ball.I had to stay there for 6 day on iv antibiotics. They gave me iv morphine for pain every 6hours and in between shots I could get 2Percocets.An unexpected surprise was at 7:30 every morning I got 40mg of methadone. The abscess required surgery and you don't heal as well if you're dope sick.Plus, they don't feel like hearing you bitch and moan.I had my own room with cable tv,good food and friends visiting and bringing me cigarettes.I almost didn't want to leave lol.
