I should add that the only reason I didn't seek actual medical attention is I was on a three day bikepacking trip, on day two, with no way to access a hospital at the time. I had to work with what I had on me (only a fool doesn't take at least some medical supplies on a multi day backcountry trip, the exacto was actually intended for cutting a shifter cable housing if I snapped a cable many miles from a bike shop). In literally any other circumstances, medical intervention is the only viable option for dealing with anything that could cause sepsis.
