Alcohol's a fucked up drug, isn't it?

Every weekend, we get fucked up on this. We don't think much of it, but it always happens
Our whole culture is revolved around it, it's what we do to enjoy ourselves.
But I don't know why, why is it that we do this?
What's so appealing about this drug?

When we drink, apparently we lose inhibition, we talk easier, we fuck each other without a second thought
and we say stupid shit we would never say otherwise, but what's the appeal?

are we really that stuck up? do we really crave a dumb drink that makes us fucked up enough to reveal our true thoughts?
it seems sometimes like that's what it's really like,
we're in a weird place, guys and girls are really the same, all we want is pleasure, and alcohol makes us tell the truth.

when people who have done other pleasurable drugs get drunk, they talk about those drugs a lot,
when people who have done coke get drunk, they talk about it all the time, it's the main goal.
i know that's definitely true with me, I'm wasted right now and i'd love some coke.

So I'm just wondering what your thoughts are, why is our society so rounded about this drug?
Is it because it's legal? widely available? maybe because it doesn't have a wide spread negative stigma attached to it?

I love drinking, but it's weird, it's fun, but do we gain anything from it, what's the point, what do you think?

I blame the fact that's how it's been for thousands and thousands of years. Too bad people don't feel the same about the poppy.

This doesn't really fit in OD so we'll try it in Drug Culture but its up to the discretion of the DC mods if this stays open/remains over there.

Cheers! Slainte! Na zdorovye!¡Salud!

OD>>>DC

Probably the most fattening drug ever! It's definitely one of the leading causes for love-handles around the world.

It's funny to see straight-edge type kids turn 21 and become ABSOLUTE alcoholics. Even though they frowned upon even moderate drug use, now they abuse alcohol like it's their right.

Oh well, I don't hate it, but I'd rather see a different substance be the primary psychoactive drug. Imagine if the world took shroom tea instead of beer.

I hate it. I learned to drink alcohol from a young age but I guess there are positive & negatives about this liquid. Give your date some wine & her inhibitions are out the window & you will have a good time. A high percent of date rapes occur under the influence of alcohol.

Yet its still a socially acceptable drug. Deals are brokered & men have proposed to their future wives drinking this liquid. Imo, its the only drug ive ever used where I lost total control of motor skills. Its legal but the police townships make tons of money enforcing the DUI laws.

Everyone drinks it, judges, lawyers & cops & who ever is of legal age but it also kills more people than a lot of the other drugs combined per year.

I quit 9 years ago & dont ever plan on going back to it. I dont miss the morning headaches & putting my socks over my shoes kind of drunken feelings.

I drink every night
all I do is sip on beer, reading forums and watching movies/tv shows
I don't loose control, aside from the occasional misspelled raged post
I think a lot of your assumptions are due to the crowd you've been around while drinking, or "partying"
When I drink with friends, we have meaningful conversations, talk about old memories, or just have good old fashioned fun, like flying kites, or playing croquet

The only time people I know talk about drugs, act stupid, and say stuff they would never say sober is when my retarded old junkie friends randomly knock on my door and start shooting up on the floor the second they come in. Then they either nearly overdose and I have to take care of them, or get really high and start acting like they are on meth and wont shut up or let me get a word in.

So I guess I could make the same thread about junkies and how retarded that scene is

But I don't know why, why is it that we do this?
Because it's legal and people like escaping their normal consciousness? Sure, there are connoisseurs for just about every type of alcoholic drink, but they're a very small minority. Everyone else just manages with it.

I mean, it's not very safe. For the most part it's not very good for you. And the effects suck compared to other drugs. But it's everywhere, there's a big industry behind it, and its use is accepted by just about everyone in our culture.

I'd be curious to see how popular alcohol would be if other drugs enjoyed the same legal status and had an industry of that size behind them.

Not everyone gets that drunk every time. I drink every night (whiskey, if you must know, usually cheap bourbon but sometimes scotch if have extra money), from about 7:30pm-3:00am lately. I like to have enough that I'm really feeling it, but can still walk straight if I want to (though the true joy of alcohol comes when one is slightly tipsy).

Why booze?

A) Being legal, it is by far the most affordable drug I can get. I can get a handle of liquor for what a fucking bag of H would cost. And, if I don't have much money, a half-pint of gin at the corner store runs me $2.18, if I were using opiates (not really connected to the opiate scene right now) or meth or some shit how much could I get for $2? None.

B) The tolerance one can build to alcohol (back in the olden days barbs also had this advantage, and G does too to an extent) is very limited. So a small amount is gonna get you good and satisfied, it's not like dope where people are shooting half a bundle at once or some shit.

C) It's also a very effective GABAergic. Sure the side effects are shitty, but if you keep it under control they don't come close to outweighing the positives. When I'm a bit drunk I can stop worrying about the future or whatever, and am not plagued by suicidal thoughts so it's a pretty damn decent activity to engage in imo.

D) As a semi-agricultural/semi-manmade product, a lot of love goes into crafting a decent drink (maybe not if you're getting the super cheap shit...), there are all different kinds of flavors, and glass bottles are just fun to look at/handle.

I've a bit of an on going problem with it, some weeks worse than others. The weird thing is if it was illegal I don't think I could be arsed but its just so convenient. Like when your trying to score some drugs and after so long you say fuck it I couldn't be arsed anymore?

I suppose when I talk about this I'm not taking about h and crack as those fuckers just can't give up it has to be got.

Those are all really good points, it's been around forever, it's easy, nobody judges you, and it keeps feeling good if you keep it under control.

I bet one of the biggest reasons is that it's legal. Alcohol's just another drug, if it was banned like opiates and cocaine and shit would people still use it as much? i bet not as many people would be into it. Or am I wrong? There's that whole argument for all drugs being legalized, who says that the same thing wouldn't happen for other drugs? If you could buy cocaine at a pharmacy, would as many people be cokeheads as there are alcoholics? It seems like a fair assumption, the whole lawbreaking thing. Or is alcohol something different? I find that 'harder' drugs like MDMA and cocaine really change me and everyone else in the sense that our personalities are really changed. Maybe that's just because I'm in high school and everyone's still growing up, but it seems like that for everyone I meet. But alcohol just makes you a bit dumber, and maybe you'd say a couple things you wouldn't normally say, but nothing huge changes, no major aspects of your personality warp themselves to the drug, do you find this too?

thanks for the replies everybody, they've been very helpful, i've been overthinking this shit for so long it's nice to have some other opinions :D

getting a little tipsy can be alright, most of the time i drink so i can tolerate the people around me...it isnt my DOC but its alright with people...or when i have some benzos and no opiates ill just sub in a couple beers or shots and i can get pretty euphoric....the key with alcohol is to know your limits.... i only drink 1-4 drinks when i do drink and i make sure i take things slow because it is a very dirty drug and its god awful spinnning feeling blows....but i think because alcohol is very sociable drugs, while other drugs make you less sociable, for instance weed for me. it also helps men achieve their only purpose in life, which is to find a female and reproduce!! when i have some alch in me i would litterally bang 90% of the people in the world lmfao....but it is a strong drug and i think people take it too lightly. sometimes i feel like people who drink daily and get wasted daily have aren;t as frowned upon as someone who does other drugs daily... its sort of acceptable which i think is absolute bullshit...some people really liek alcohol but i dont htink i would ever become an alcoholic, the buzz is alright but nothing like a full mu-receptor agonist...oh the fucking bliss!! yess give me more!! but with alcohol its sort of like, i feel full and bloated and dizzy blechh its a dirty drugs and i hate most dirty drugs ithey just give me feelings of unease, but opiates and weed give me such a natural high, i love it !!!

very well put!

Also, its one of the most social drugs out there. People love getting drunk with other people.

For me, alcohol also helps during social situations where I would normally have anxiety. It sucks but sometimes it's one of the ways that calms me down and allows me to be social around people.

mom was a trailer trash drunk farm girl. So I got a lot of hot feelings on booze.

i didn't drink in Nam, maybe a few mixed drinks in Germany.

When I hit thirty I discovered Signature beer. Then the strip clubs and the associated bar fights.

I screwed up my life for a few years and then quit.

I love pretty much any alcoholic beverage. I can find a way to enjoy a glass of wine, with any (/every) meal, a cocktail before or after any/every meal, a sporting event to enjoy a beer or six with... shit, alcohol is practically reason enough by itself to have a party (Hey I have a ton of beer, bring some friends). The way it effects my personality, to a certain level, is very enjoyable. I am a painfully negative person in daily life, and introverted, bordering on misanthropic even... but when I drink socially, I become THE goddamn butterfly from the metaphor. I actually enjoy the company of others, actively seek it out, hit on girls I normally would just talk trash about behind their backs, joke around with guys I would normally think of as being beneath me, or not worth the effort of befriending.

And let's not forget the variety, the nuance, the history. A single snifter of Cognac... the process to ferment the fruit, distill it, barrel it, age it, bottle it, design the bottle, the art, the history behind the great Cognac houses... all of it is a part of the experience. And every variety of liquor, beer, wine, sake, all of them have this same depth. I can't drink vodka without slipping into Russian for a moment or two, toasting, tossing out the few phrases, and cultural tid-bits I know, or remember. Alcohol is universal!

Until the morning after, when you hate everything, everyone, and most of all, that painful dryness in your throat, and the jackhammer at work behind your eyes.
