In an igloo made of asbestos and chicken-wire.
she dreams of ash
not all the time but quite enough
she's lost two children
(but one doesn't count they say)
still it's quite enough
it's quite enough

she chops up the cot
with a little axe
too angry to make words
too sad to try

all her scars are on the inside, you see
17 years wasn't enough to kill her
17 years is a woman's work
violence is what women live
and when it was all over
and they chose her side over his
her statement was this;

i raised good children
i raised them well

she lost a mother
she lost a son
she lost a daughter
(but she doesn't count they say)

and now she finds solace
in raising the rest of them
but there's her and Jesse left
her and Jesse

her no-hoper brother has found hope
and even the drunk has gone
and the only one who needs her anymore
never suffered through the hard times
maybe that's why he's her favourite hope

maybe he's her favourite hope
maybe he's her favourite hope

and when it's all over
you're someone our mother could be proud of
you're someone she is proud of
and that's all she expected from any of us
and that's all we wanted to be

I love you Tania Maree.

:)
