A snob buys a 360...

Not on a train, sadly.
Boxing Day... they had it (the 4gb) for sale at $130. That's cheaper than a PSP!!

The problem? I am a die-hard PS2 fan who has yet to see anything on the new consoles (with the exception of Oblivion - but that's originally a PC game :p). So in a way, I kinda always looked down at the new consoles...

So, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any "smart" games for the 360? (or the original xbox, assuming backwards-compatibility)? By "smart" I mean something that is artistic, very original, and/or extremely complex. Examples include Final Fantasy 12, Katamari Damaci, Bomberman, Shadow of the Colossus, Vagrant Story.

I already got Oblivion and Bioshock - two games I already consider "smart". I also got Final Fantasy 13 with a lot of cynicism... so far it feels like such a ripoff, but I will keep trying till the middle where I was promised by everyone that it will get far better...

I wasn't too impressed with fallout 3 (felt like a severely stripped-down oblivion), but am interested in fallout: vegas (great soundtrack!) when it becomes more affordable.

Things I DO NOT consider "smart" include ANY military-sim, halo, god of war, and the like. I get bored very quickly from shooting/sword-hacking games.

Any recommendations for his snob? :D

Check out crackdown.

It is a shooter, but the game is an open sandbox, and the game is different in that you are a superhero type dude but the gameplay is very VERTICALLY oriented and thus is totally different from anything else. Climbing skyscrapers is fun, and jumping across the cities rooftops is killer.

braid is another xbox arcade title that i think you could consider smart

maybe portal as well.
hrm, this is a tough one. you have bioshock on there, but i wouldnt consider it a "smart" game. its a first person shooter with a fantastic story and setting. you still just run around and shooot things though. (i love bioshock 1, bioshock 2 was a great game, but returning to rapture just wasnt as impressive as the first go round. prolly the novelty of it.)
there is a new bioshock (infinite i think) due out next year that doesnt go back to rapture. its actually a prequel that happens in a floating city. im sure it will rock.
ill have to go through and see if i can find more games that would appeal to you. i know that there are a ton of board games on live arcade. catan, carcassonne and risk just to name a few. i dont know if you consider those smart or not though.

I second Mass Effect, although I'll add the disclaimer that I've only played the 2nd one.

Definitely one of the best games I've ever played, all things included (e.g. storyline, graphics, gameplay)

srsly?
i cant bring myself to play either mass effect for more than a few hours. id try dragons age origins in there too then, its tactical.

Mass effect was boring to me. I tried but, I only made it a couple hours in before I traded it.

This is a tough one. Alan Wake seems interesting though I haven't played it yet.

I saw you got the 4gig. Just fyi if you can get you hands on another 360 HD, like a 120 (even an old style one) you can easily pop it in. There's tons of tutorials online so I'll save that. You can even use a regular PC SATA drive but, I believe you have to add some M$ proprietary software for it to work and it seemed a bit much to me.

im pretty sure the 4 gig is internal and doesnt require you to move your data

dun mean to troll but if you truly are a snob, chances are u wont be very satisfied with any next-gen gaming system

psychonauts is an xbox game but you can get it for 360. great game all around

^ There's Conker: live and reloaded which is an xbox game too but which is playable on the 360. Great fun.

Dead Rising. Not exactly a "smart" game but its very witty in its own way.

Indigo Prophesy on original X-Box is a very smart and artistic game. Highly recommend.

seriously,
Limbo
Braid
Portal

all are downloadeable from xboxlive and superb on the brains. you will love them, jammy.

Crackdown's reticule bloom is the way Halo:Reach's bloom should be

(Yes atri I'm sill pissed about Reach)

STAFF - Sorry for the DBL Post I'll Consolidate the two.

**Post 2** If anyone is interested in posting some free XBL arcade games that would be cool :)

another + for limbo and braid. Jamshyd, I am very much like you in that I like games that are somewhat mentally stimulating as well as requiring fast twitching (I thought bioshock sucked though). try darksiders for a fun hack and slash that also has some interesting/challenging puzzles.
