A real danger from e-cigarettes - turn down the heat

I use my e-cig, a lot. I'm not really planning on stopping using one, because I actually enjoy using it. Nicotine itself is about as harmful as caffeine, in normal doses, so it's not really something I feel compelled to quit.

You've got to die of something. It won't be any of the diseases I was vaccinated against as a child, it's unlikely to be starvation, and I'm not working in an industry that is famous for fatal accidents. There is hardly any chance of me dying in childbirth -- and in any case, that would be recorded as a uterus transplant gone horribly wrong. I love life waayyy too much to be thinking of suicide. So that leaves precious little besides lifestyle-related causes for me to die of. Obesity, drug abuse or smoking. Which I'll gladly take over polio, whooping cough, measles, malnutrition, being crushed in a machine, dying with a baby halfway out of me (it's an alternate history, I'm allowed to be cis in it) or picking up a fatal infection during / after surgery any day of the week, thank you.

I'm also not bothered about winning any "best-preserved body in the cemetery" awards.

Isn't it strange how so soon after a major study declares e-cigs 95% healthier than tobacco, another study pops up with the headline grabbing claim that they can produce up to 15 times the level of carcinogenic formaldehyde. How the hell did the first study miss that then? So what do we believe? 95% healthier, or 15 times more carcinogenic? The two statements are mutually exclusive. Hmm, I smell funding from the tobacco companies...

Any road up, methinks I need to jump on this bandwagon - if only to have something to fall back on when I run out of baccy. So what models do you BL vapers recommend?

Also, I reckon there's got to be a market for e-cigs that look like a 'Camberwell carrot', or even a chillum or bong!

also it's a good idea to learn how to mix your own liquid for the ecigs, then you can make up large quantities using bulk materials off ebay and put whatever water based food flavourings you like into it.

it works out at less than a fiver for 100ml of 5.2mg/ml strength liquid with flavouring, when I mix it up. Economy of scale for sure. Plus you know exactly what you are vaping. 100ml might last me a fortnight or longer. So compared with spending a fiver or a tenner a day on cigs, there is a huge cost saving for someone switching from smoking to vaping.

Above all, the health improvement acheived from switching from cigarettes to vaping, is absolutely worth it and for any smoker trying to quit, I think these things will become very very useful as they address the inhalation / relaxation aspect of smoking that other NRT's such as patches or gum do not.

The OP seems to me to reiterate why e-cigs are better than smoking - the key risk factor involved in smoking is burning stuff which creates various nasties. The report just agrees with that and says 'don't slightly burn your nicotine liquid'.

Obviously better to do neither, but no serious scientist would say 'keep on smoking the fags' (95% is a big number).

Yep. Cheers for seeing that Vurt.

I really do believe some of you should look at what lies behind your sensitiveness and defensiveness on the issue.

Addiction is a nasty state of mind.

I'd recommend one of these http://www.kangeronline.com/products/kanger-subox-nano-pink-starter-kit (they do come in different colours :D )

i kind of like it. even though it kind of looks like a cheap sex toy.
http://www.theelectroniccigarette.co.uk/products/e-cigarette-kits/view-all-kits/curve-2-mini-kit-and-free-e-liquid-2-product.html ive got one of those and it's really good. i have found that certain liquids do burn a bit if the battery is turned right up :(

julie: maybe with all the formaldehyde we're smoking, we will win the best preserved body in the cemetery awards. here's hoping.

i wonder who is supplying the money to fund the research.

surely big tobacco has nothing to gain from fear propaganda surrounding e-cigs.

they have a shitload of tax revenue to lose that is for sure, EU legislation is coming into place soon to address this.

Indeed, the best option is to not inhale anything other than air into your lungs. As a harm reduction device though, for smokers trying to quit, e-cigs can be transformative.

You can still be left with a nicotine addiction, but without the carginogenic pyrolysis products of burning tobacco, it becomes more akin to the caffeine addiction many people have.

variable output just means you can push the coil harder to produce more vapour, its nice to have the option to have gentle vapour or blasts of clouds

I went from ~20 fat roll-ups a day to ~5 small ones (I cut a bit of the rizlas off) in the space of a week!

I was PROPER surprised and I'm coughing up instead of just coughing *~^_^~*

Glad I didn't get one of those "turn up the heat!" ones and got mine from the pharmacy: pamflets and all :)

I need to start mixing my own liquids, it's stupidly cheap. I keep buying the cheap ones, that are like five for a tenner, because they're everywhere, but they're pretty hit and miss. The tobacco companies probably don't want to slate e-cigs, because once they're controlled, it'll be those money-grabbing fuckers making them, I'm sure.

mixing them is very straightforward, get yourself a 100ml glass measuring cylinder, pharma grade pg and vg from ebay, flavouring from an onine vendor, etc, it is much much better than buying random bottles of god knows what you get in the shops.
