A New Theory

some mutations actually occur at very regular rates. So regular in fact we use them to determine when two species diverged. Other mutations are random. Nothing's that simple ;)

okay. yes i would have to agree. im totally not against evolution at regular rates. as such, i believe we are gradually losing our pinky finger. i was actually wondering just a few days ago, the comparison of average length of the pinky now 2011 vs then 1011...
i think it is this gradual change that forces a mutated birth eventually. the gradual ie unseen as a cause to the spontaneous ie seen. where the body recognizes the pattern of evolvement and reproduces a "spurt" in that recognized direction. where the spurt equals the noticable change and the direction of movement equals the gradual rate of change.
