The hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum has been used for centuries in shamanistic ceremonies led by spiritual healers in Mexico. But now the drug has gotten so popular among recreational users in America (street names: Magic Mint, Sally D) that the government has taken notice: it's been banned in 15 states and federal legislation has been introduced to regulate the plant as a Schedule 1 drug, like marijuana, heroin and ecstasy.

According to recent surveys, users say burning and inhaling the smoke of dried Salvia leaves produces powerful hallucinogenic effects, and helps reduce anxiety, improve mood and increase insight. In one case, a woman with drug-resistant depression claimed significant improvements in mood after experimenting with Salvia.

Based on animal studies of salvinorin A, the active ingredient in the Salvia plant, some neuropharmacologists believe the drug may have merits beyond getting people high. It could perhaps aid in the medical treatment of serious mental conditions or chronic pain — but some scientists worry that strict federal regulation could undermine its utility.

Sad to see it being lumped into schedule 1...
Glad to see its getting some medical attention

Too bad once its schedule one any scientific testing will be halted abruptly.

This is so fuckin stupid. There has never been any evidence to suggest salvia is remotely dangerous that i have ever heard of. Fuck the government for banning getting high even if its not dangerous.

Even if it is dangerous to the user it should be legal, because its your right as a human being.

Overall, I don't find Salvia's effects to be very fun or comforting. It can be downright scary and dangerous if used improperly (eg. up on a water tower with a high level dose). Even so, banning it outright is dangerous and stupid for other reasons. This plant can easily hide in your garden as just another nondescript Labitae, which pretty much ensures its continued availability. All a ban will accomplish is providing the country with another unregulated substance which we'd know more about if researchers had the freedom to study it without legal repercussions.

Salvia has shown me some beautiful things when it wasn't scaring the crap out of me. It think there's huge potential for emotional healing to be found there, and I hate to think we will be deprived of yet another way to free our minds.

You know it's a fascist state when the big issues can't be voted for :(

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- in 5th grade DARE officers should distribute one huge hit of extract to each student and tell them that's what 'drugs' are. Those kids would be scared shitless of trying anything else for a looooong time.

yeah legislators don't realize how this drug is an antigateway drug
they even ban things that help their cause
counterproductivity is their main characteristic

^good advice. I would have NEVER done drugs if salvia was my first trip...never ever ever.

Lol @ 'street names' for salvia. There won't be street names for it until its banned nation wide.

Spot on. Didn't do salvia until I was 19 or 20. Smoked it less than 5 times. Burnt a huge hole in my carpet as I blew the cherry out of the pipe and just watched it burned fucked up as hell.

Good times. Good apartment. We miss you.
