News of Mr. Ulbricht’s arrest, and the particulars of the crimes with which he was charged, elicited the inevitable chorus of “They’ve got the wrong guy” from friends and relatives, an almost clichéd feature of double-life cases. But this chorus was different. Sure, Mr. Ulbricht took his share of drugs growing up in Austin, Tex. And a high school buddy, Thomas Haney, said he could sort of imagine Ross buying from Silk Road. But running it? Ordering killings? No way.

long article but it was a great read with my paper and a cup of coffee (btw, am I the only person that actually reads a physical newspaper every morning these days?)

Btw, I would very much like to point out that at no point in the article do they mention SR 2.0 or the possibility that Ross was framed in order to test the whole security system after NSA revelations. It's also very possible that Ross might have made some really stupid moves and was 'purged' by the new administration simply to tie off that loose end.

My grandma still reads the newspaper Benny lol. I read online how the fbi took him down before he could close his laptop. Sales were slightly over one billion dollars when SR was online. Sounds made up,but who knows.

I still skim through a newspaper more days than not. It still is worthwhile for getting information at times, mostly for local news. Plus I do the crossword and jumble thing, there is maybe 2 comic strips I will read(which might be funny 1 out of 5 times) and it provides a nice list of all sport events on TV for the day so I know what there is to gamble on and watch.

Concerning the article, I love the fact that he was an eagle scout. The few kids I remember from highschool who were eagle scouts were pretty big time nerds. I wonder if this is a huge shock to his former HS classmates, I would guess it is.

Thats a great article.. I love the New York Times.

"The success of Silk Road raised the prospect that the thuggish street drug dealer, the stock character of countless police procedurals, could be replaced by a geek in a coffee shop with a laptop."

Love this.. I bet that DAVID SEGAL read some Bluelight when writing this. I hope that the agencies over stepped their legal bounds by leaps and bounds and he ends up getting a sweet plea deal and he gets his cash back or at least has another bit wallet stashed around somewhere safe.

I'm not a fan of David Segal, but the article was certainly well written. My main gripe with him is that he definitley known for selective editing (just like he doesn't mention that SR is back and from what I can tell, doing well). He also doesn't mention that the DPR is a brazen mutha fucka who is even more political and more vocal on the clear web then his predecessor. He also doesn't mention that this 2 year operation netted only a handful of people but introduced millions to the idea that you can now buy drugs on the internet.

Great post.

I wonder if the 600k in bitcoin was actually Ulbrict's or if that was the SR wallet making it the distributed moneys of buyers and sellers.
