a good book

The world according to Garp by John Irving.

Here You can find a wonderful free book that resembles a PKD story, only it's not as esoteric. Read it last summer myself, certainly the pick of the year.

1984 is a must, though it's already been mentioned.

A passage to India by E.M Forster - I think the copyright might be expired, so a digital copy may be downloadable (I know I did :p)

edit: Da Vinci code was very entertaining and exciting, it's like something Crichton might write, but perhaps even better.

The only Crichton book I enjoyed (actually dug it a lot) is 'The Sphere'. Definitely worth picking up at a used book store.

Heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad.
(The horror, the horror)

I'll second Pride & Prejudice, and even if there's not enough time to read through it, the BBC series is faithful & well made.
