“A game of Chess”
That which follows stands as a testament to what spontaneity can yield . . .
You showed me how to play,
Though I was never very good.
You taught me the rules,
But I fought to make my own.
And so we sat down
To play a game of chess.
A bitter test of wills I shall recall
Of my first encounter
Giving only a shroud of hope
A blade of grass to cling to in a hurricane
But did I ask for more?
I would have settled for less -
Time will record the great game of chess
As it played out
We told our selves that
time may record a stalemate as the outcome
But we knew the moves before they were played out
And we knew the players before they became causalities
But for all it was worth
We knew the results
Before we began
A bizarre encounter
With only pawns and kings
Moving ever forward to a certain devastating fate
Locked in battle the combatants made their moves
And knowing full well the inevitable result
The combatants waged their stakes
Where the winner takes all
Contemplating the next move
As the game progressed
The contestants grew weary
And eager to end hostilities
Fascination meet with me as I manipulated the pieces
And kept me enraptured
Waiting for what will come next!
Though I knew full well what was to come –
You had me in checkmate before my first move
And I knew I could do no more
And time will record the winner
But time will not forget the loser -
For now I will prefer a much simpler game
And so I sit
To enjoy a peaceful game of solitaire
But to this field of black and white I will return
And I know . . .
There will be more matches to be played
And I know . . .
there will be new contestants to battle with
And although the stakes were high
And the causalities were many
I will never forget
Nor regret
That game of chess
Epilogue
I arrange the pieces on that even field of black and white
To play the game again
But something has changed,
The rules are the same
And the pieces are familiar too
But the results remain to be seen
And so I will give all of my heart to this rematch
And play it with the best of my skill . . .
In this match I will not concern my self with the end,
But only with the game,
And with the best part –
Playing with you!

Good call. That is where the joy is. That is what winning in life is all about.
Nicely written. Although you might have done more with less. ( ...my only criticism, and ever so slight. )
Rock on brother! on those new fields of black and white!

simply brilliant.
