I'm not too sure how BB software works, but I've seen signature's on vbulletin 3, any reason we cant have the same?
also (this is just a wish) imagine if we could have a post 'like' (similar to Facebook) button that would be cool, and probably save on server resources.

i noticed BL is funded by donations, this might sound strange but have you ever thought of merchandise (hats, shirts, badges)? i mean average joe would have no idea what BL is, but people in the know would be like 'oh cool another BLer'

much peace and love

Signatures are a feature that is exclusive to staff members.
If you see someone who has a sig that isn't on staff (i.e. xenocat, alasdair) they type theirs out every time.
Also, regarding the BL merch, there is already discussion in Second Opinion on the topic. It can be found here.

oh, that's a bit unfair.... better start typing up some code to copy paste :)

still think the merchandise idea is a good one, not fukin polo's and shit, really trippy clothes and beanies like these:

or these for crack heads

just a thought

You have to look at the cost. "Polo's and shit" tends to be a bit more affordable than knit beanies. Therefore, you get a much better turn around on your investment. Which means you get more money from the site.
Have you seen Erowid's merch? Sure, it's nice, but it's gonna cost you a pretty penny. You'll get more people to buy if it's relatively inexpensive. That's why the calendar is such a good idea. It's dirt cheap to make, and no matter what you sell it for, you're making money. It just needs a little more thought put into it than last year's attempt.

And if you have suggestions for products, click the link I posted. That's what that thread is there for. You had just better be able to find a place that will make what you have in mind.

I believe signatures were allowed for members years ago however it was abused so much and required so much moderation that continuing to allow them became unfeasible. I could be wrong so hopefully some of the old-schoolers can drop some eggs of knowledge on us :)

Almost positive you're right on that one

Sigs used to be available for everybody, although it was always an irritant (stupid images, banners, long strings of text, etc).

Sigs were later limited, in 2003, via a vB hack that only permits the user's first post in a thread to display their sig. This was largely to reduce the amount of screen real estate taken up by gaudy sigs.

Sigs were finally disabled to all users in 2006. I seem to recall it came via an upgrade (along with maybe restrictions on members making polls), but IIRC was precipitated by abuse of the feature (people linking to spam, trade services, occasional vendors).

When they are abused, they require Admin CP access to alter them. Thus, it's a pain in the arse, and the burden is placed on a small number of people to police it.

Currently, as of 2009/10, staff can use the sig feature to promote forum business. The 'user's first post in a thread' hack is still enforced.

================

Merchandise is in the pipeline.

================

The +1 'like' feature has merit, particularly when it comes to praising good posts. I guess it depends on how much benefit the forum would get for the additional work it would require to install the feature.

it's not full on code, just a stylized, personalized signature

For good reason, they were disabled. There's no need to be a dick towards the moderators; tambourine-man simply provided the answer to your question. You were dissatisfied with the answer, but you alone control your response to it.

^oh, I'm sorry i didn't mean to be a dick, the use of 'jerk' in my neck of the woods means 'knucklehead' kinda an endearing insult, i called him a jerk because of the poll he created at the top of the page there were only two options 'fail' and 'fail' I have no problem with signatures being disabled and have come up with a solution which i think is appropriate (basically what you do with your name)

edit: do you actually read the thread in detail from start to finish, cause you only seem to comment on the first sentence i write and ignore the rest........ plus you must have missed the poll at the top wouldn't you be annoyed at that? I'm not angry were all here for shitz and gigs
