a few hash oil queestions

I'm going to start by apologizing if this is a repeat thread, the search engine is down and I couldn't find the answers to my questions online. So, if anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
1- How many people will a gram smoke out?
2- Is there any way to ID oil as being legit? Is it ever something other than a black tar?
3- Smoking methods - what's the best way? Also, I know some people smear a bit on the inside of a paper and then roll a cig; will it work if you smear some on the outside of a normal, packaged cigarette?
4- Does it have a distinct smell like pot does?

It has a distinct pine-y smell when it burns. It also should taste like taking a huge hit of pine needles... and, it hurts.
The best way I've found to smoke it is kind of ghetto, but it works wonders. Cut/burn a hole in the side of a one liter. Put some hash oil on the cherry of a joint (or a menthol cigarette if you must) and put the joint in the hole. The top should be on tightly. Thick-ass smoke will pour up. When most of the hash has burned off, remove the joint, cover the hole, unscrew the lid and squish the bottle.
You get a strong, fast hit. A couple decent sized tokes should set you.
