Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

I like the image of him on the beach. Is this about death?
Very beautiful either way.

A good friend once told me not to take it all too seriously. She's pretty damned smart.
Thanks girl.

I recently watched a show on tv about Poe. Every woman in his life died from TB. As a child he contracted it and was a carrier. He never got too ill from it but he passed it to his birth mother, his step-mother, and tradgically, his wife. All of these women passed away before his eyes because of this illness that he passed to them. They slipped away from him just like the grains of sand slipped through his fingers is this poem. How very sad

"It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance. It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes a chance. It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give. And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live."
