A Disc (Firsbee) Golf Thread

I was looking around and noticed there was no disc golf thread here. I figure there has to be some BL disc golfers on here. How long have you guys been playing and what discs are you currently using? I've been disc golfing for about 8 years. I currently have in my bag: Pro Firebird (171 Grams), KC Pro Banshee (174 grams), KC Pro Roc (172 grams), and a Champion Spider for putting.

but yes, I love tossing discs. already this season, I have probably gone about 10 times (the weather hasn't been that nice for April).

how are the courses in Illinois, Ornette? I am lucky here in Central Ohio to be enveloped in about 5 great courses, all very different styles of play.

my main driver is a Championship Firebird. I just picked up a very heavy Championship Boss, which has a super wide lip which is perfect for thumbing. I put with a Soft Magnet, which I love to throw due to how floppy it is.

what are some of your main throws? I do a lot of thumbing and tomahawking (putting two fingers in the lip), but I also have a pretty proficient backhand. I freaking love this sport as it is so relaxing to go outside for an hour or so, with some good friends, and just shoot the shit in the sunlight. it has been an integral part of my life for about 6 or so years. I hated living on the East Coast because this sport truly seems to be an Eastern Midwest (maybe some parts down south) type of thing.
 
Champion Firebirds FTW. That what I usually throw, but at the store I go to, they didn't have one in the weight I wanted, so I went with the pro. The courses here in Illinois are great. We have quite a few PDGA tournaments around my home town (near Peoria) and there are quite a few good courses up here where I go to school (Northern Illinois). I mainly throw what I call sidearm but a lot of people call backhand. I have been working on my regular throw a lot more because one of the courses I go to has a bunch of left turn doglegs. Here in DeKalb, the course is only a 9 hole that is always crowded but theres a really nice 18 about 15 minutes away that has woods and a lake that you have to throw across. Disc golf has been a savior for me during the summer because in my hometown, there really isn't anything else to do. Plus, everyone with good drugs is down at the park playing. :)

sidearm, backhand, yeah I suppose it is the same thing. I love that throw, but it really is nothing compared to my tomahawk. not many players use this throw, and some look down upon it, do you?

because for those pesky holes that curve to the left, the tomahawk is the perfect throw.

all you do is have the "face" of the disc (where the logo is) to the left, and then you stick your index and middle finger in the lip. throw it overhand, and it will initially go straight and maybe a little bit to the right, but then it will beautifully curve down under and go to the left. maybe something to think about.

do you have any putting tips? I really feel that if I had a better mid-range, close-range shot, then I would absolutely KILL most courses. but I hit those clutch shots maybe half the time, and these shots are what I feel separate the pedestrian from the pro.

what I usually do before puts is just take a minute to ascertain where the basket is, and try to visualize it going in. I take a half minute to just simply align the disc with the basket. too often I think people rush their putts, which can lead to some misses.
 
The tomahawk is good in certain situations. There is a hole that I play that is easier if you just tomahawk it over the trees, but I haven't really worked on getting it down real well.

Putting and mid-range is my forte. One of the biggest problems people have is they don't aim high enough on longer putts. You have to remember that the disc is going to fall with gravity, so aim a little high, towards the top of the basket.

Also, getting a rhythm down is key. Do it the same way every time, like a basketball player does with free throws. Also, on longer putts, I like to use a heavy driver instead of a putter or mid-range, especially on a windy day. But getting a rhythm down like a free throw is probably the best tip I have, though the aiming a bit higher helps a lot of people that are always smacking their disc off the basket.
 
San Diego has a great dedicated disc golf course next to Balboa Park. It's a 19 hole course with lots of hills and trees to give you a reason to use all of your different throws and discs. I tend to use my wraith (the rath) quite often because it's predictable to me.

Have you tried that Aerobie disc golf that has the assymetric lip? If you hammer it, it does like a 720 and dives like a jet fighter for ultra long drives :o)

My buddy bought one and we couldn't figure out how to throw the damn thing. I think its still sitting in his car's trunk from the first day we tried using it.
 
I LOVE FROLF! i go almost every day. luckily where i am there are 5 courses within ten minutes of eachother 2 18 holes and 3 9 holes. and they are all free. i heard some places charge you to folf. probly the most fucked up thing ive ever heard
 
^ yeah, dude there is one course that charges around me. it used to be 75 cents but over about five years it got up to $1.50. I played there for the first time in a year or so last weekend, and I really hate the course. it is kept up really well, but it is so easy. I got a 15 on 18 holes without even really trying.

I mean - I pay god damn taxes for a reason! you know, fellas? this charging is for the birds.
 
I have never been to a course that you have to pay for and never will. That is just stupid, paying to play disc, unless its a tournament. The only course I would pay for would be a huge indoor course so you could play year round, but that might be a bit unfeasible.
 
just started playin disc golf recently but i love it! Unfortunately theres only 1 course around my area that I know of..

usually my friends and I head to a local park and just choose random shit to throw at, still pretty fun but I love going to a real course! That's where all the cool people are at anyway lol
 
FROLF is awesome! In Dayton Ohio there are 5 courses, although 2 that I really like to play, The Kettering Rec Course and the Belmont Park course.

The Wraith is a great driver, but honestly I don't notice much difference is the discs, and I am quite good. As for putting, any old putter will work for me. I guess when you are as bad ass as me on the course you could throw anything and still do great :).

It's a great sport to get high to while playing!
 
I live near a public park that has a really nice 18 hole course you can play for free. The weather has been perfect lately, i've been going 3 or 4 times a week.

Currently I drive with a Valkyrie DX and starfire star. I use a birdie for mid range and putt with a spider. My Starfire is by far my best disk atm only use the valkrie when i need a long gliding understable shot.
 
I love the Valkyrie for drives.

the weather is finally starting to break here in the Midwest and that means this next season of frisbee golf is upon us!

didnt even know there was one around

thought about goin disc golfing this afternoon but i didnt make it

yesterday n todays weather was awesome, perfect days
 
^^ yea i dont know my frisbees' brand or whatever, ( i could go look but i've never been concerned about brand)

but i am a Novice in all sense in terms of Disc Golf

i love to do it, and have done it a lot, particularly a year or so ago, i do alright as far as usually just +1 or 2 in terms of whatever Par the course is marked

there are a handful of courses around here. Bear Creek is a really nice one that is like conjoined with a real golf course (nice one) out by the airport

then there are some around the local lakes and stuff. only one though around Campus and its lame

but to respond to your statement, people take this game very seriously. and in thier own right some people take it as serious regular golf.

its extremly fun to do. go out with some joints, some beers (cans only ;) ) and some discs n some friends and its always a good afternoon.
 
^^ haha yea there are people smoking weed and drinking constantly on the course where I play, such a hippie sport lol.
 
I flaked out on some friends who went disc golfing yesterday

i wanted to go, but i had studying to do n we were suppossed to go at 4 but i didnt hear from them till 5:30 so i didnt end up goin
