Envy of another
can arise when they reflect the buried within you,
but may also spawn out of misunderstanding,
and when you chase it,
try to awaken the buried alive inside,
strive to integrate it,
only to find yourself, on the seeming cusp
of psychological reconciliation,
with your head slamming against
that impenetrable wall,
you realize you were only riding a high,
now forced to follow the dreadful comedown,
and a sadness arrives in the exhale,
but with it greater knowledge
of what defines you,
of what defines them,
of what, perhaps, can never change,
and maybe shouldn't, even if it could.
For we are not the same inside,
and there is a beauty in the diversity.
Survival comes not from eliminating differences,
but honoring them.
Individuality and unity
are not necessarily antithetical.
And if the best of us is to ultimately show itself,
if anything of us is to prosper,
they mustn't be.
