50 Stars: Americans, teach us about your country.

Texas is vast and diverse........The part I live in is geographically classified as tropical rain forest......although we are currently in a severe dry period, we usually get lots of rain here.

the cost of living is moderate... the wage is low to medium. the outdoor sport activities are fantastic. Lots of great hunting and fishing opportunities. a real red neck paradise.

*Texas has the country's second-highest gross state product.

*San Antonio was briefly the state's capital.

*West Texas is famous for its Permian outcrops, while many of the oil fields along the Gulf Coast are situated above deeply-buried Jurassic salt domes.

Personal note:
My own feelings about this state have always been mixed. I consider it home--I'm a Texan, body and soul--but I also acknowledge its flaws. The political corruption here makes Congress look like a bunch of Solons, while the general troglodytic, narrow attitudes besmirch us in the eyes of the rest of the country (to say nothing of the world). This state isn't run by cowboys, but it is run by people who think they're cowboys, and that's almost as bad.

Is it also still true that Texas is the fattest state in the US?

I would not be sad if I never stepped foot back in Texas.
It is too hot,its too humid, too religious.
They are right with the whole 'everything is bigger in Texas' thing- Egos, the acceptance of racism, hair, nails, the number of jocks , the number of closed minded people, and the number of religious nuts.

I am NOT saying that that is all there is in Texas. There are some awesome people in Texas- but most of the time, even the awesome people will admit those complaints are true of Texas......

To give Tx credit- It has great food :)

Substitute instances of "Texas" and "Tx" for "California" and "Ca" when we get to discussing California. ;)

On topic:

  • Austin is the capital
  • Austin is considered the "Live music capital of the world"
  • The Texas state flag is the only state flag that is allowed to fly at the same height as the US flag
  • It takes an entire day to drive the length or width of the state
  • JFK was killed in Dallas

I just had a job interview there in Houston. At the interview, I mentioned that I'm an avid cyclist and don't have a car. The prospective boss asked me "Why? "
That someone would ask such a question disturbed me greatly. Although I was offered the job, I turned it down, mostly because of that question.

^if you are going to come out with a statement of fact, interviewers tend to ask you to elaborate a bit more. Possibly wanting you to talk more on environmental issues or find out if you have a pure hatred for gas guzzling vehicles. I think we've all been asked daft questions during interviews & they throw silly little things like that to put you off.

You must have answered it to be offered the job. What did you say?

To me, it seems that Washington, along with Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Arizona, is one of the best places in America when it comes to nature. I have yet to visit the west coast to pay homage to the Great Redwood...

YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
WhatI have been waiting for!!!!!
I will have more to add later today I am sure b/c I am still waking up at the moment- BUT
Washington is the best state I have lived in.
It is beautiful,awe inspiring nature.......
The people are all in their own worlds, very laid back, seem to be very open-minded when it comes to religion, people who live in Washington seem to be more humble and appreciative of nature......
We have the best coffee (and yeah, no, I'm not talking about starbucks!)!!
We have breathtaking mountains, thick moss covered forests, ferns as large as a 10 year old child, BEAUTIFUL beaches, awesome islands, lots of organic and unusual food, bright blue glacier fed lakes and rivers, fruit and veggie stands all over the place......ocean.........
I will have more later......

I used to haul frozen french fries from rogers of walla walla when I was a truck driver. It was shortly after the Mt St Helens eruption. I remember you could buy clear plastic pens filled with volcanic ash in the souvenir shops in Walla Walla, Washington.

You can still buy those papa :) And these green stones (I forget what they are called) from volcanic ash.......
And yes- I can't forget about mentioning the rain!!
We have this incredibly beautiful misty rain that happens in the fall and winter mostly- ;)
Washington has this tale that is told by all non Washingtonians that it rains ALL the time......
NYC, Houston and many many many other places actually get more rain than Seattle (which is one of the more rainy areas of Washington- the rain forest being the rainiest though)
Our weather is awesome- we have this dramatic fog that strolls in and blankets the islands......the fogs rests at the bottom of mountains, settling into the valleys.......We have strong windstorms that can reach hurricane force winds and rarely get thunderstorms......We will sometimes, in the lowlands, get periods of cold that will produce snow but not nearly as much as is thought of for our area. The mountains get huge amounts of snow though.......
In the summer, the nonstop sunshine streaks can last months and be exhausting;) (I like foggy, misty days)

I think the myth comes from the fact that only 43% of Washington days are sunny. Thus, people associate the gray (often light drizzle) with rain. I prefer the sun. ;) Not trying to hate on your state just not for me.
