5-htp, how much do you personally like it?

I just bought 50mg 5-htp about 2 weeks ago and started dosing one in the morning one in the night.

I feel a mild effect in the morning, tho i might contribute it to placebo, I still enjoy it however. And at night it Seems to help me fall asleep a bit easier and deeper, and I don't think this is completely placebo.

Either way, I have not rolled again since I started taking it.

I am thinking of taking it 2 weeks straight morning and night directly after the night I roll, then discontinue until I roll again 2-4 weeks later, and then start the process over. (that means I'm rolling once every 4-6 weeks)

this way I figure I will keep my tolerance down for 5-htp effectiveness and limit the possible negative side effects of 5-htp (5-htp converting to serotonin before it reaches ur brain while still in bloodstream, putting strain on lungs and heart)

so 2 questions

who else takes 5-htp and if u do do you notice any desirable effects and does it help restore your serotonin.

And what is the schedule of how you take it. IE the frequency (how many mg, what time of day)

Where on earth have you heard of possible negative side effects of taking 5-htp supplements?

Tons of different sources. Not just one. I knew someone was gonna ask this cuz I researched all about 5-htp for a long time.

I wish I could go into detail about it right now but I am in the bathroom at work and gotto get back.

Try 5htp.com tho that's a good one

basically 5-htp is a precurser to serotonin, as u may know, 5-htp when joined with vitamin b6 (or 12, forget which one) converts it into serotonin. If the 5-htp is joined with the b vitamin before it reaches the brain (which means it's in the bloodstream, then it does not pass thru or convert in the brain and therefore causes the damages) I highly recommend u research it.

It's recommended while taking 5-htp u do not supplement the b vitamins because with a healthy diet u shoul have more than enough to convert the 5-htp, and when u have the excess it converts more of the 5-htp early.

Back to work, I'll check this threa later

@ TearItDown- he's right, 5-htp converts to serotonin largely in the gut if there is a high level of b6 present, which is unhealthy, though not very serious. Think heartburn/gas/mild nausea in some situations, although I've never experienced any of the latter, even on taking 1 gram of the stuff for attempted recreational use.

But honestly Alldaykk, 5-htp is a pretty safe and well-researched supplement. Keep your dosages between 100-200mgs, and do on-off cycles with more time off than on, and you will be safe as can be (assuming you're not taking any SSRI antidepressants.)

Now as for how 5-htp effects MDMA use... unfortunately, I never had the chance to pre-load with 5-htp before I lost the magic, so I can't give a completely accurate account on how it effects a decent ecstasy high. I can say however that on the few occasions I did pre-load with 5-htp, the high was much cleaner and less agitated, and I really did notice an almost-complete alleviation of post-use depression. Whether or not this was a placebo, I don't really care.

Hope that helps, stay safe and good luck! :)

Lol I agree man placebo or not if it helps it feels like it helps!!

Anyone feel as if 5-htp truly restored ur serotonin supply sooner?

I think I remember reading about it not going into your bloodstream and I was under the interpretation it doesn't really cause any harm. Sure, your liver and kidneys might take a small hit but not much worse than other vitamins.

I like taking it when i get that feeling that tomorrow will be a bad day.

Also i done a two week trial taking 100mg before bed. It actually helped me wake up in a more positive mood. Though i have been diagnosed as bipolar fyi. In my opinion, it would be great if doctors started this before prescribing SSRI's and Trycyclic anti-depressants. Which can cause many adverse side effects.

If you take a vitamin(s) supplement(s) , alternate every other day just in case you think the kidneys might get taxed.

i like taking 5-htp the morning after a night of rolling. it really helps straighten me out during the next few days when i would normally feel like crap. i dont pre load with it like some people do.

This is good advice to pick up on. One thing that people don't realize is that vitamins are good, but after a certain point it becomes extra work that your body needs to process.

I came across this site while looking for current 5-HTP info and wanted to share my experience that might help someone else. I am 34 years old and in my early 20's I discovered the underground scene and its common counter part MDMA. Back then I was lucky enough (or unlucky enough however you wanna look at it) to have a freind who distributed pure MDMA caps. Needless to say the goodtimes rolled (no pun intended) for probably 2 years EVERY weeked. The weekday hell that began to materialize forced me to educate myself and I taught myself about the chemistry of what was happening. After discovering I could by 5-HTP I tried it and it changed my life. Now its my opinion I aleady suffered from mild depression before I started experimenting with MDMA which may account for why I felt such dramatic effects but nonetheless I felt like a new person. Very commonly we humans will mistakenly take drugs without realizing why. Those of us that already suffer from some form of depression unknowingly use drugs like MDMA in an attempt to find relief from the depressive effects we were naturally cursed with. I say this because after detoxing and supplementing 5-HTP (200 mg a day) I never again had a thriving desire to take any drugs much less MDMA (I've tried just about everything except Heroin). Im 34 now and have been taking 5-HTP since I was probably 24-25. I've stopped taking it several times in the past hoping its treatment repaired any damage I had done but its absence was glaringly obvious for me so I've decided it just a part of who I am now and a reason why I beleive my drug seeking behavior originated because of my depression in the first place. Its a very fine line and grey area that lies in the recreational drug use and self medication. I am the last person to lecture anyone but if I might be able to give some insight to the next person about thier actions then call it a "service announcement". However I can attest that constant long term 5-HTP use is harmless for me. I've had several physicals with blood work and have never had a medical condition of any kind much less something attributed to extended 5-HTP use. Pay attention to using 5-HTP merely to recover and then allowing the process to start all over again, its possible there is a bigger issue at hand than may be understood.

What is pre-loading and how do you do it? I have 5-htp, and I plan on taking it every day until my next roll over xmas break (prolly 3-4 weeks away). Is that a good idea? or is stopping before you roll a better idea?

I find one or two 100mg tablets with 500mg of piracetam just before bed works wonders - nice and drowsy in a few mins then sleep! Only take it when i'm a bit stressed and run down through work. Yet to try it after a big bing on the mdma.

I personally would recommend to take it every day, at least 100mg until 1 week to 5 days before your roll. It is important to discontinue a few days prior as so that the effects are not still lingerinf. There are many subjective reports to show that not only can this reduce the effects of the roll, but can also cause other problems such as serotonin sydrome. I am also a very very firm believer in piracetam andit has worked wonders for me. You dont have to discontinue the piracetam prior to a roll. Using these methods i am able to roll once a month a a very high euphoric level each time, with really no lingering effects or depression minus perhaps sleep deprivation the next day, but thats not speciically the mdmas fault for me staying up partying til 5 or 6 in te morning ;)

I've been taking 100mg pills of 5-htp once a day for a week or so after a roll-- can't really tell if it's helping, but I don't seem to get depressed, moody or extra tired after rolls like other people report so I'm going to keep doing it, can't hurt. I do notice when I take it, I may get like a head rush dizziness feeling for a few seconds at a time throuout the day. Does anyone else get this from 5-htp or could it be leftover or hangover effects from the ecstasy? Never really use to get this before rolling. Also noticed I may need viagara more likely when I'm on the 5-htp; it does something down there similar to when I take ecstasy. This is why I only take it for a week after rolling then stop till the next time.

I guess I'll contribute. I used to roll too often 2 years ago, and within those times, I would almost always take 5-HTP. It helped tremendously!

however now that I've been clean off ALL mind altering chemicals for almost 2 years, I have taken it off and on, and I'll tell you, now, it doesn't do shit.

My usage is for around 1-2 weeks after taking MDMA to recover.

I've also taken it on a one off basis for mood elevation (not really sure if there was much of an effect).

Overall, I wouldn't take it daily. I didn't really see much of a benefit. Some bad side effects: my heart rate seems a little off while on it, and libido was decreased.

I've heard mixed experiences with long term usage and preloading. A lot of the reports I've read have said that you'll have a decreased roll because of 5htp usage prior. My regimen was to use 5htp for a week or two then switch to SJW (I took it for 4-5 months, and quit a month prior).

Take 5htp nightly, 100mg. After rolls typically take 150-200.

Rolling weekly for the past 2 months. Every roll is just as magical as the previous one on 2 beans. Am throwing MDA in there as well. Not sure if this is why... but having the time of my life until I have to stop for good on new years.

Credit all this FUN to the 5htp. Rolls are great, no real tolerance noticed, no issues indicating low serotonin levels.

Happy rolling!

To the previous poster, how is 5htp bullshit when it is the precursor to the stuff that makes you roll. It's common sense. :)

5-htp is a bunch of bullshit and a total scam.

Go ahead and waste your money if you want, it doesn't do jack shit as the receptors in your brain will not accept incoming seratonin after all the work it had to go through releasing all the seratonin from the mdma.

Its a joke, and another way for stupid e-tards (god I swear...etards are by far the dumbest druggies out there....being an ex e-tard really makes me embarressed after seeing some of your guys posts)

If your dieing for help, get an benzo (xanax, valium, k-pin) and it should help with the depression.

If your going with alprazolam (xanax) i would take low doses though if your taking it on the comedown: it can make you pretty stupid on the comedown =D

The claim by the website that 5-HTP showed a 50% improvement in depressed patients is supported by a double blind study done by Dr. W. Poldinger in Switzerland. The study used patients diagnosed with depression who then took 100 mg of 5-HTP for six weeks (www.biosynergy.com/5htp.htm). In the articles which I found on the web, all claimed 5-HTP showed a great improvement in depressed patients however, only this one article gave a substantial amount of detail.
