5-HTP Dependency

I read in the "Harm Minimisation Supplements" thread that taking 5-HTP for too long without dopamine precursors causes your body to become dependent. I did a little more research and found that 5-HTP basically depletes your dopamine when you use it for long periods of time.

My question is: after MDMA usage would it be beneficial to take 5-HTP for longer periods of time (i.e. 2-4 weeks) as long as a dopamine precursor such as L-tyrosine was used to maintain normal dopamine levels? Or would this open up a can of worms and cause other issues such as dependence upon l-tyrosine, etc? What are your thoughts?

There really isnt any need to take 5htp for a long period of time and you should never take more than the suggested dose. 3 or 4 days is all you would need to use it for to be honest (if your using it to balance serotonin used up when you roll).

Hey you shouldnt depend on 5-htp at all, I heard from some Pharmacists, that it can mess with your liver. The best way to rebuild your seratonin naturally is sleep!

is there any sort of evidence to support that? from what i've heard, it can take up to a month to fully regenerate seratonin, which is why i was wondering if supplementing 5-HTP for longer would accelerate that process.

I have been taking 5-htp everyday along with L-dopa and l-tyrosine and l-cysteine for over 8 months now. Its part of the NeuroReplete program. You take the supplements for 3 weeks then submit a urine test and they determine how much of each you need to take everyday. It has replaced benzos and anti-depressants for me.

heres the link if you want to check it out.

assuming you're using less than once a month or so, your serotonin will be around baseline after several days. it goes in a curve, not a straight line, approaching normal slower over time (fast at first)

about evidence, i haven't researched MDMA in a long time, nor taken it in years (:( can't find any). i'm pretty sure this is general info here though

From what I have heard, the process to make serotonin in the body is relatively slow. Throwing a barrage of serotonin precursors at your body for weeks and weeks isn't going to make that process go any more quickly. It is recommended to take 5-HTP only for the few days following your wild party night because that's all your body needs to rebuild. After that, you just need to give it time to carry out the cycle and be ready for more neural overstimulation.

The best way to return serotonin levels back to normal more quickly? Get plenty of sleep, be in the sun for a few minutes each day, eat a balanced diet with plenty of carbs and protein, exercise, and don't abuse MDMA.

Serotonin isnt just there for when you roll - the amounts change on a daily basis depending on your mood/body etc. When you roll the amount drops quickly but will start to rebuild as soon as the MDMA stops - if your spacing out your rolls by a few months then your serotonin will naturally get back to base level.

The 5htp just gives you a bit of a boost to avoid the normal midweek crash - you could just skip the 5htp completely, sleep and do some exercise which will also raise your serotonin levels just as quickly as popping a few pills. From my experience I would rather pop a pill the day after Ive been dancing for10 hours than eating a well balanced meal and going for a run.

Different people have different views on 5htp some swear by it - some dont take it at all thinking its a waste of time.

There is no definate answer on 5htp and MDMA induced reduced serotonin levels.

Yeah I'm generally a little hungover and tired the day after and the 5-HTP helps. I lift weights 5 days a week and I'm pretty hardcore about my diet so that's obviously helping a lot too

fuck that stuff, i took 150mg for 4-5 days after the past 2 comedowns, helped me while i was doing it to feel better, after i stopped though the next 2 days were hell, i'm def going to try another supplement because 5htp kills me once i stop taking it

I hope this isn't the case, I've been taking 5htp every second day for like over 2 months now. Is it possible that this will happen to me? Can anyone enlighten me on this topic?

yeah chances are very high that with a taper you won't really notice much if any rebound. probably without a taper too

of course you may experience symptoms again that 5htp helped with, if you take it for symptoms besides MDMA after effects
