5 HTP causing insomnia

Hi all,

Recently I took 5 HTP to treat depression related insomnia but to my surprise it is causing the opposite effect, It is giving me sleepless nights. I took it about 2 hours before bedtime and it made me feel drowsy initially but then I woke up after 2 hours feeling extremely tired and couldn't get back to sleep again.
I only started taking 5 HTP after reading reviews about it on various places on internet (vast majority of them were positive about its sleep inducing effects).

Does someone know of a better way of taking 5 HTP or is it not meant for insomnia? I am 100% sure that I suffer from stress and depression.

You need a sedative with it...

5-HTP is not all cracked up to what people lead it to be...

I'd pop it to wake up with a coffee in the morning... To reduce anxiety and depression...

But, as a sleep aid, I'd take melatonin...

Well you can try l-tryptophan, which is essentially what 5-htp should be like. From a lot of reading and research on 5-htp I've found all it really does is convert to melatonin, and provides serotonin to the gut, not the brain.

L-tryptophan produces serotonin at a much better level and is actually able to cross the blood brain barrier. I found that it was very uplifting and worked wonders in comparison to 5-htp.

You should try something called Relax-All with Phenibut. It contains l-tryptophan and a small dose of phenibut (a GABA-B modulator) to make you drowsy but wake up fresh. You can also purchase it without the phenibut in it too.

Thanks for your opinions.

I did a lot of research on 5 htp before ordering two expensive variants of it and both of them didn't work. Before ordering these, I read 100% positive reviews about 5 htp and nearly all of them were positive about its effectiveness as sleep and mood aid. But after taking it first few times I have found it is completely opposite to being a sleep or mood aid. All it does is tire me out and not let me sleep at all. The scary thing about l-tryptophan is its involvement in deaths in the 80s even though it was due to a tainted supply but it still makes it scary. When I first decided to take natural anti-depressants I thought they were without any side effects and risks but after taking 5 htp it seems this is more dangerous path than prescription anti-depressants.

5-htp is in no way more dangerous than prescription antidepressants.
It may cause insomnia in some but this has been noted before.
Some people get a positive boost from it, others get anxiety and racing thoughts, which fits your description perfectly.
However the list of side effects prescription antidepressants can cause is pretty lengthy and pretty serious.

You must not have looked hard enough...

5-htp can cause one to be just as much serotonergicly uncomforted as a antidepressant.

It causes sleepless nights for me as well...wish ambien was OTC...why isn't it? You can't OD on it..oh that's right it's habit forming.
