My dog has some serious arthritis issues, and my doctor prescribed him two 200mg doses of Tramadol per day.. my dog weighs 115 pounds and obviosly has no tolerance to opiates.. I was reading that if you take 400mg of Tramadoll a day you can have a seizure. I need someone to help me answer a few questions so i can talk to my parents about the risk.

1. Will my dog have a seizure with this dose?

2. How long will it take before he has withdrawal symptoms?

3. Should i try some to know how he is feeling while he is on Tramadol?

1. Its possible, it just depends on your dogs existing seizure threshold. Just watch his behavior. That dosing is consistent with veterinary ranges for canines.

2. It generally takes a few weeks of daily use for physical dependence to develop. Why exactly would he be withdrawing?

3. No. Don't steal your pet's medications.

1. Not at that dose - as long as the Vet prescribed it at 200mg he should be feelin' like he has two peters. You're gonna want to monitor him so that he doesn't start taking a higher, more recreational dose though. Keep them stored in a high place, out of his reach. Don't be surprised if he's tends to stagger a bit when you take him for walks.

2. We will probably start withdrawls at least 24-48 hours after stoppage. Taper him slowly. (1 for you, 2 for me, 1 for you 2 for me, etc)

3. That would be the humane thing to do...
