Substance: 4-HO-MET (hcl), aka "Metocin"
Dose: 25 mg (orally)
Experience: First time!
Related Experience: Psilocybin mushrooms, 4-AcO-DMT, 6-Apb
Set/Setting: Well-rested, early Monday morning at my apartment alone. Trip activities well-planned beforehand but didn’t quite go as planned…
Background: I don’t respond well to psychedelics in general due to intense bodyload issues. My roommate has tried 4-HO-MET on two occasions, reporting 4-FA-like body sensations, mild stimulation and colorful visuals (which confirms everything I’ve read about Metocin basically). This is in contrast to the heavy, sedating high of 4-AcO-DMT. Despite my general distaste for psychedelics, I decided to go big on my first trip since I do respond well to stimulants/entactogens.
Holy damn.
The first signals set in around 20 minutes after drinking the Metocin in a glass of water. I knew immediately that the trip was going to be derailed and that I needed to lie down STAT. I managed to pour some water and stumbled to my bed, where my mind was sucked into a vacuum of colorful—and powerful—visions. My body was wracked by the typical fever/chills I get on psychedelics, which made for an uncomfortable trip.
For the next 8 hours, I could do nothing but lie in bed and watch as a warped version of my psyche was projected through the Technicolor screen of my mind. Thoughts centered on my ancestors, with my mind tracing back my family tree on all sides as far as I could mentally go, through the suffering of my Native American ancestors to the hardships of my German and Irish family members that are now long gone. I thought about each member of my family and how they all had their own flaws and vulnerabilities, and how we were all going to die someday. I focused on my own generation and the energy I wanted to vibrate outward to the world (which happened to be a plum-colored hue that tasted like strawberry shortcake, LOL!). I experienced repetitive thought loop phrases including, “she sowed the seeds of her own destruction” and “raped by a rainbow” (double LOL!). These disturbing thoughts were offset by hilarious ones that were too strange to put into words but elicited out-loud laughter 8(
As for the visuals, they were the most noteworthy part of the Metocin experience. Whoever described it as a “big, gay rainbow world” was right on! I experienced both open- and closed-eye visuals saturated with beautiful colors (mainly pinks, purples and blues highlighted in neon-tinged yellows and oranges). The vividness of the 4-HO-MET visuals make shroom visuals look dull and drab by comparison. I can only imagine how much more magnificent they would’ve been in an outdoor setting like a beach or open field.
The main side effects were body-oriented and included intense jaw clenching and the sweating-fever-chills trifecta I often get on psychedelics (my roommate reported only jaw clenching and dehydration—no fever). I drank as much water as I could during the trip, but my stomach was somewhat upset. Not nausea--just heartburn, probably made worse by the Emergen-C powder I ate straight from the packet beforehand.
Honestly, the trip was both amazing and horrible at the same time. The true benefits weren't fully apparent until it was all over, which was about 8-10 hours after dosing. Parts of my brain were activated that haven't been fully "turned on" since childhood. The afterglow is breathtaking. The inspirational/creative powers of Metocin are greater than any other tryptamine or phenethylamine I’ve ever tried, which includes mescaline cactus, shrooms, salvia leaves, 4-AcO-DMT and 6-Apb. I often see the substance described as more “recreational” and "shallow" than other tryptamines, but I’m here to tell you that is NOT the case. If you take enough, you will have your mind blown apart…or “raped by a rainbow" as I experienced
I plan to give 4-HO-MET another try in a much smaller dose at the beach in the near future, perhaps in the 5-8 mg range. Other settings that would be ideal for this substance--concerts, festivals (Rainbow Gathering, perhaps?!), lazy summer afternoons, road trips, rainy days and any temperate outdoor setting like a forest or open field. It would probably mix well in low doses with small amounts of 4-FA or another gentle stimulant, which is how I plan to take it next time (proceed with caution if doing this, as many people find 4-HO-MET to be stimulating on its own). It seems to be more dehydrating than similar substances, so drink plenty of water before and during the experience.
Since it's hard to put into words, here's a collage of the colors/scenes/thoughts I experienced on my trip:
