It is incorrect to assert that a majority, or even a minoritiy of licensed venues search for weapons as a condition of entry to a pub/club. In fact, it is illegal for security guards to search a person without the same probably cause as a police officer. they can insist to search, but the worst possible repurcussion is refuse entry, and without probable cause, the venue is liable to a violation of the Liquor Licensing Act & the Trade Practices Act, so its hardly worth the effort to search patrons. that is the law, and violating it opens liability to costly lawsuits, commercial agent fines & criminal charges (patting down a patron without cause is assault, sexual assault if you touch the waist or below)

Hold your horses, i am aware of this. I know all about the Liquor Licensing Act. I was not saying ALL places do it. Don't assume im speaking for every single friggen place in town. I was merely saying that even at dance parties their search efforts are pretty slack. At alot of the places I have been to and worked at, there have been security guards with metal detector wands on the door. And that was only put in place after someone got visciously stabbed or something magor went down there.

seriously what kind of stupid motherfucker can afford the kind trouble that comes from firing a gun in a crowded night club district for no reason beyond getting let in the club

I know people are stupid but god some are just goddamn thick

Im calm VT. But you must of interpreted (sp?) that section wrong. The focus there being on dance parties. Not just pubs and clubs.

Speaking from my own experience there have been a number of places I have been where people with bags are asked to open them.

We all know security can be pretty slack when it comes to the good old entry searches and pat downs.
This statement gives rise to assumption that "entry searches and pat downs" are common place; they arent, its not even legal to perform them, that's what im saying. Please calm down.

Im perfectly calm :) I have stated BEFORE:

I've been to many different clubs and venues in Sydney. I've been to an ass load of festivals and a couple of raves. The only time I've ever been patted down was at one of the raves. Also, at Sublime I was checked with a hand held metal detector. Nowhere else.

And yes UnSquare, just about any club asks for hats to be removed. Not at festivals I've been to though, where I've always worn hats. Makes you wonder whether they even do the hat thing for security reasons, seems more of a fashion restriction when they do it at clubs.

Yeah I have seriously never been patted down, I've had that paddle thing waved over me a thousand times, but never a pat down.

You will find that VT is correct, it is illegal for a bouncer/security contractor to physicaly touch you, unless they are defending themselves from an physical assault. Even police will need too prove an adequate level of suspicion before they are entitled to 'pat' you down.

Having said that, Im sure UnSquare speaks truth also, im sure there are plenty of places that just do whatever they want, but then again i doubt i go to the same places that UnSq does

Years ago, a bouncer was shot at a club up in Brisbane called "Grand Orbit". The ironic (and sad) thing about it was that the place had metal detectors but the bouncer was shot before the guy went through it. :\

DJC* - It's just strange that it took him SO long to realise that shots had been fired, as they were really loud, and it seemed that everyone but him knew something was up. Where were his people, his security? It's an all-round shitty situation, and the footage (especially the second video) is horrifying. :( How the hell did someone get into a venue with what sounded like a semi-automatic weapon??

To play devil's advocate for a moment....

He probably heard the shots, but he was probably not aware of what they were (e.g. firecrackers, etc.) until he saw everyone running for the hills. I mean, he is a DJ which 1) he was surrounded by monitors 2) was wearing headphones and 3) probably has hearing damage as most DJs do to some degree or another.

Let's face it. He was mostly staring at the mixer and probably didn't see what was going on.

Just some food for thought.

Yeah, true - however, it seemed like he was mixing, then he turned around a few times, then one last time for ages, and then all of a sudden he turned back and ducked for cover. I think it took too long for the message that SOMEONE WAS FIRING SHOTS AT THE GIG to get to him. :\

The whole situation is shit, though. :(

I agree. Honestly, I'd probably freak out and scream like a little girl. :\

I'm more surprised at the fact that there aren't any primary news sites covering it or at least the shooting part. It seems like other sites are, but more so because of the video. Maybe I just live in a different world.

Yeah true that. But it is kind of hard to weave your way through hundreds of people on a dance floor.

If you go to around the 3min 30sec mark in this video you can see the panic as people try to rush to find an exit. They run from one side to the next and just jump over the bodies :\

They just run from one exit to the next trying to get out :(

someone needs to merge all these threads! these are some pretty sad events....

You cannot wear a hat because it obstructs the camera's view of your face. if you flip out and commit crimes in the venue, your headwear has the potential to ruin identification. i support this rule

QFT. obviously some venues will ignore the law, its upto the patron to make a choice between that particular venue and their civil liberty :o
