of skin and soul
9/8/01
Did you catch that frigid breeze?
What’s the dark in the distance?
Is the death coming for all, or is it just my own?
What’s this; my eyes are sweating?
My skin is crying? My soul is dying?
Will you hold me?
What’s left after infinity?

We’re all worried here; we’re all scared - it all seems like some crude fiction
that envelopes our nation, our reality, our world
as it crumbles, breaks through and destroys our secure illusions and mundane worries,
leaving us back on a real level, with eyes blast open wide.
In the wake of this tragedy, and that to come
free from lies in our violent shaking along with the rest of them
scared and aware of our true vulnerability.
And all this anger, and all this rage.
We point the finger, and focus on the surface once again,
generalizing, stereotyping, with prejudice and racism
and at this hour we still don’t truly know who’s responsible.
Take good care, cradle your mind with new eyes
realize that tomorrow could be a dark day that could bring anything
and don’t fight the fire with fire; you only feed the flames
don’t try to defeat the enemy by becoming him, giving into irrational rage;
the goal is justice, not vengeance;
to conquer by standing firm and thinking through,
not barging in and lashing out.
The flag still stands, for what it’s worth
and it’s been torn by the broken system over the years, but it can be fixed
we can move forward, but I’m feeling a dire slant, a wrong angle
ways of revenge and irrational means of prevention can only bring us down
so think deeply before speaking, think wisely before acting,
consider strongly before suggesting, blaming or supporting
keep and eye out before you point the finger.
Keep an eye on freedom, not a stricter illusion.
Target the real madness, not a category in your mind, using this as
a crude way of justifying your own short-sightedness and shallow-mindedness.
Remember: that’s what got us here.
Breathe deep.
We’re all worried here.
We’re all scared.
the foreseeable results

Mouth agape; terror’s stricken home.
Didn’t you know we were always vulnerable?
Scared and angry, find the adversary.
Ensure this never happens again; all means necessary.
And so they ran to their cells to secure their sense of freedom.
And so they truly handed over their freedoms for illusion of greater security.
Big Brother, won’t you protect me?
Here’s a little more of our freedom, a little more money.
Uncle Sam, I want you to secure the land for me.
You know you’ve got to be slaves to be free from the enemy.
Welcome to the land of the meek.
Pin down our equality of restriction.
The rich and the poor are equal tonight,
both denied the rights to sleep under the streetlight.
It’s all for the better, though, all for our interests.
Maybe, but the road to hell was paved with good intentions.
Centralize; disrupt the balance of power.
Let’s group together, America, to deface America.
And all in the name of these `necessary illusions.’
