A young man tried to rape a 99-year-old great grandmother in her own home last year after breaking in to steal money when he was sacked from his job, a court has heard.
Christopher James Valle, 24, had taken LSD the night before the September attack, which has left the elderly victim traumatised both physically and emotionally.
Crown prosecutor Ray Gibson told the County Court this morning that Valle had broken into the woman's house after the keys were left in the front door.
Valle told her that he was returning the keys to her and then said he should check the house for its safety.
Mr Gibson said Valle then assaulted the victim after stealing her credit card and threw her on to her bed.
She fought him off her as he tried to sexually assault her, Mr Gibson said.
Valle tried to suffocate the woman, and she continued to beat him off while he had a towel over her head.
Valle pleaded guilty to one charge of aggravated burglary, one count of attempted rape, one count of theft and one count of recklessly causing injury and two counts of indecent assault.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said she was still struggling with what she had gone through.
She said that Valle seemed like a “nice young man” who was returning her keys.
She said she had been living alone since the 1960s and before the attack had never felt nervous or worried about being alone.
She said she had changed her locks after the attack. “I used to go for long walks and I used to potter in the garden,” she said, adding that she did not do these things any more.
The woman said she could still feel Valle's hands around her neck.
Relatives, in their victim impact statement, said the woman feared Valle would return to her house when released.
Defence counsel Wendy Duncan said Valle was genuinely remorseful for what he had done and realised that “I've destroyed their lives”.
Valle told police that on the day of the attack “I felt spaced out, it didn't feel real, I wasn't me … it was only supposed to be a break-in”.
Mr Gibson said Valle had had a fight with his boss and another employee and lost his job on the morning of the attack.
He had only been in Victoria for four days after arriving from Queensland to look for a job, Mr Gibson said.
Mr Gibson has asked judge Roy Punshon to have Valle registered as a sex offender. The plea hearing continues, before sentencing at a later date.
