22-year-old who set off to start a new life with $16K, has it seized by DEA

So now corporations have all the rights afforded to citizens (without any of the duties required of citizens) AND now capital has some of the right afforded to citizens, just that in the case of capital it is presumed guilty until proven innocent. This country is fucking crazy. So many of our truly great leader that helped to create the society we live in and the rule of law are rolling over in their graves. In this case, I hope there is a hell, and that all DEA agents and their ilk end up their on a direct flight... fuck me, jesus!

DEA = organized crime backed by government with a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence (in all its forms)

Fixed :)

I don't think that's right that they took his money.

But why was he carrying that much cash at once?

I know people who are from cultures that mainly deal with money by paying in cash only; but even they don't carry around large sums of money like this, and if it's a large sum and they are moving they keep it in the bank or in savings.

It happened, Rivers said, to him on April 15 as he was traveling on Amtrak from Dearborn, Mich., near his hometown of Romulus, Mich., to Los Angeles to fulfill his dream of making a music video. Rivers, in an email, said he had saved his money for years, and his mother and other relatives scraped together the rest of the $16,000.

Rivers said he carried his savings in cash because he has had problems in the past with taking out large sums of money from out-of-state banks.

The money was obviously legit . It was STILL IN THE BANK ENVELOPE. A crook would at least make an attempt to hide it . Geez.

Claiming to Smell Pot, Airport Cops Steal $11,000 From College Student

Charles Clarke says he is a smoker, not a dealer, but it may not matter.

When he visited relatives in Cincinnati the winter before last, Charles Clarke, a 24-year-old college student, took with him $11,000 that he had saved from wages, financial aid, and family gifts because he did not want to lose it. He did not count on the armed robbers at the airport, who took every last cent as he was about to board a flight back to Orlando in February 2014. Adding insult to injury, the thieves were cops, who justified confiscating Clarke's life savings by claiming his luggage and cash smelled like pot.

More than a year later, Clarke is still trying to get his money back, and now he has help from the Institute for Justice, the public interest law firm that has been fighting this sort of forfeiture abuse for years. While Clarke admits that he was a recreational pot smoker, he says he was never involved in the marijuana trade. "I'm not a drug dealer," he told Vox's German Lopez. "I never have been."

But the federal prosecutors who are pursuing forfeiture of Clarke's money do not have to prove he was a drug dealer.

If the case goes to trial, it is enough for them to show by a preponderance of the evidence—a much lower standard than the proof beyond a reasonable doubt required for a criminal conviction—that the money had something to do with marijuana, whether it came from selling the drug or was intended to buy it. Meanwhile, the government keeps the cash based on "probable cause that it was proceeds of drug trafficking or was intended to be used in an illegal drug transaction," and the burden is on Clarke to recover it.

"Carrying cash is not a crime," says Insitute for Justice attorney Darpana Sheth. "No one should lose their life savings when no drugs or evidence of any crime are found on them or their belongings." I.J. notes that the number of seizures by police at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport exploded from a couple dozen a year in the late 1990s to nearly 100, totaling $2 million, in 2013.

By pursuing forfeiture under federal law through the Justice Department's Equitable Sharing Program, the airport cops can keep up to 80 percent of the loot while letting the feds do most of the work.

"Civil forfeiture allows law enforcement officials to keep the money they seize, which encourages them to target ordinary citizens like Charles," says Renée Flaherty, another I.J. lawyer. “Police and prosecutors cannot treat citizens like ATMs.”

As I've said before we live in a Police State. I feel terrible for the victims of these crimes.
As that's exactly what they are. Law enforcement engaging in armed robbery.
The sheeple erm populace of this country need to wake up & do something before things get even worse.

I agree and would recommend forwarding it to as many people as possible. American citizens need to wake the fuck up.

That is the problem 98% or more of Americans are asleep and jjust don't care until it happens to them... Its all about L.E. acting more like a gang and just stealing innocent peoples money that they themselves pocket... they are worse the the REAL drug dealers, these DEA agents are basically satanic gang members that did this. and this has been happening for years, there are tons of stories out there where innocent people get money seized.. the mistake Rivers made was let them search his bag.. He didn't know his bill of rights and that is the problem. Most Americans don't know their rights and the cops take advantage of that to fuck you over and throw in a cage or just steal your money and tell you to leave. its police culture they act like a gang more then a job to serve and protect us... We taxpayers pay their salaries for them to abuse us and throw us in cages for non-violent "crimes"
