2024 US Presidential Election

Producing our own Oil and other products in the U.S. will make the prices go down.
Do you think a 20% tariff across the board will lower prices?

Something you might remember is that inflation is, and has been for a while, down.
Deflation is hard to achieve without creating a recession. Might be that wages increasing without sparking more inflation would actually be easier to accomplish.

Figure it out for yourself.

awesome.

i'm just trying to understand what exactly you are suggesting. if you can't or won't explain your position that's fine but it's hard to not draw the obvious solution.

moving on, i see and hear a lot of "drill baby drill" rhetoric from trump but that's transparently just that - campaign rhetoric - designed to fire up his base, rather than anything close to substantive policy which might explain exactly how he plans to do what he says he'll do. it also conveniently ignores the fact that market supply and demand have rather more impact on oil (and gas) prices than anything the president does.

And deplete our reserves. Why not exploit the world first like we always have? The US has the largest oil reserves on the planet. Personally I wana keep it that way so when everyone else is fucked into driving tiny crap boxes I can still power my full-size pickup 🤔

"And deplete our reserves ?" How long would that take ?

"Why not exploit the world first like we always have ?" Both can be done at the same time.

I presume you've never read his philosophical ideas? I've actually never heard anyone anyone hate on Aurelius before, let alone call him a douchebag :ROFLMAO: . You made me smile, thanks.

He was suspicious of his own power. He had a servant who followed him around, and whenever someone complimented him, the servant would whisper in his ear, "You are only a man... you are a mortal man.", etc.

He had brilliant ideas and was one of the most popular emporers for a reason.
But, he was still an emperor. Easy to preach facile philosophy when you are literally the most powerful man in the world. Even the Buddha renounced all his riches and explored the other side of the coin before preaching anything. I mean come on, Rome had fucking slaves for Christ sake.. you can't preach stoicism when you are literally presiding over a system like that - how useful do you think Stoicism was for the slaves?

There's so much better philosophy out there than Stoicism, especially for the times we live in. As I said, we could utilize some destructive emotions positively.. channelling the spirit of Uncle Ted. If we don't, well, you can see day by day where we are all going to end up; then you really better hope the Roman slave profited from Stoicism, because we'll find we have more in common with him than Aurelius!

I can separate the art from the artist.

I would hope there would be, 2000 years later. Many modern philosophies borrow ideas from stoicism. It's far from useless.

I love stoicism and cynicism for what they are, not necessarily how practical they are in my life. Like art. I also enjoy history.

I've only seen bits and pieces of the Fox interview so far. The commentary I've read and what I saw (so far) was this.
Harris was wanting to appeal to women (Fox women in this case). An interview of her constantly being interrupted by a man is alrighty, I guess. We'll see.

not sure if there's a hint of sarcasm in there but that kind of attitude is basically why a significant portion of people even within your western ally nations think that the USA is a nation of dicks... always on the high horse about "freedom" and "values" when in reality it is just about global hegemony and extracting wealth and power.

Outsider opinion from across the pond:

Kamala Harris is a lot better than Hilary Clinton (who was deranged at Trump level) and also clearly better than Biden (who is simply bland) and has the common sense to pursue a rhetoric of unity with what seems to me like good timing.

I haven't seen her in action previously but i watched the Fox interview. I think she did a great job and came across surprisingly sympathetic. I am generally very neutral toward US domestic politics, but it seems obvious to me that she is the better candidate than Trump at this point.
