2017 Trump Presidency Thread

Almost all NFL players have mild brain damage so it seems a bit stupid to look to them for profound political insights.
NBA players are also now getting involved when they really should just be quiet and enjoy the millions they get paid to play with their balls and entertain us.
And these "protests" are helping Trump politically. Not respecting the flag, the anthem, the country and the people that have died for the nation is blatantly creating division, and many people have a problem with this. It is considered an unspoken line that you do not cross. You have the right to protest whenever you like - doesn't mean that it's a good idea during the national anthem.

Seriously, tell me. How do you define race?
We talk of a race like it's nationality (e. g. the German race) or a skin color (e.g. a Somalia, a descendent of former slaves from West Africa, and a San living in the US are all "African-Americans", even though they are very distinct on a genetic level). But trying to define it is hard.

It does get confusing sometimes thanks to the very liberal (no pun intended) way that so many are using the word lately to attack others. Let's take the boxer Canelo Alvarez for example. He is super Mexican but does not look Mexican at all. If I made a stupid joke about him eating tacos and wearing a sombrero, that isn't actually racism by definition. You could call it being culturally insensitive or ignorant/intolerant/offensive. But if I for eg. said that he was inferior because he is a white Mexican, that would be racist. It's like when people say that they have a problem with Muslims, sometimes their opinion stems from ignorance but often it is a legitimate criticism. The offended ones will automatically envisage (and loudly decry) racism yet there are white/black/arab and asian Muslims. The critics of the Muslims do not have a problem with their race, they have a problem with the ideology that they adhere to (and are prone to fight for). Not all cultures are created equal. Some have incorporated very bad ideas that are definitely deserving of criticism, and it is important not to conflate legitimate cultural critiques with racism.

Racism is serious. You'd be surprised how many people the Left are currently branding "racist" that are the exact opposite. These speakers and activists are trying to explain that if you allow racism to be devoid of its true meaning, then incidents of legitimate racism are not going to receive the amount of attention and outrage that they deserve.
It is quite the twist of irony that the people who think that they are fighting against racism are inadvertedly facilitating it by not treating it seriously enough.

Trump's up there starting world war 3
someone's never heard of the military-industrial complex.

I'm quite familiar with the military industrial complex. I thought trump didn't play by the rules of the establishment, and that's something his supporters like about him?

This is the very definition of ableism.
You can't discredit people's opinions because they may have brain damage.

Out of interest, how does the latest Trump entourage private email scandal compare to Hillary's?

^it's a non-issue and not even comparable to what Clinton did.
Clinton should literally be jailed for her crimes.

Also, how about Trump being right on the wiretapping?

It is obvious by now that Trump has no control over US foreign policy. I surmised that this was the case and unfortunately seems to be true. We all still need to be deathly afraid of the Deep State and their plans because they are chugging along irrespective of Trump being in charge. I guess it is good to see it proven. So Trump is mostly just bloviating on the world stage, like when he addresses Rocket Man Kim. I disagreed with the tone of his speech at the UN, but whatever, the UN is also mostly theater. Trump and Kim are not going to nuke each other over childish banter. If we get into any major wars you can bet it was crafted from behind the scenes.

"you have the right to protest but..."

talking about the importance of freedom then getting bent out of shape when somebody does it in a way that you don't like is called paying lip service...

the idea that to not stand while the national anthem is playing shows a lack of respect for, or allegiance to, the nation is just simplistic, not to mention lazy. also, it's just not binary and reminds me of bush's famous "if you are not with us, you're against us". i'm a myers-briggs estj so, believe me, i get seeing the world in black and white, but the issue is not black and white - there are hundreds of shades in between.

in a healthy relationship, criticism and admonishment are as fundamental as love, if not fundamental elements of love. what would be unpartriotic would be for him to not do what he's doing out of some unexamined sense of 'patriotism'.

as trevor noah astutely asked a few months ago, how else was he supposed to send his message? what was the right way? send a tweet? nope, that's the refuge of the lazy and the superficial. pivot to the issue in a post-game interview? that would have been, for many, more respectful but he'd still have been criticized for it.

he's an athlete so, given his inability to wear, say, a shirt with a protest message, he silently knelt during the national anthem. saying he's spitting in the face of the military by doing so is mock outrage.

so, if marching is bad. if assembling is bad. if quietly kneeling is bad. what is the 'good' way for a black man to protest? what use is a protest that is so antiseptic it gets no attention?

^ at what cost?

i think children and grandchildren will look back on this time and be shocked that we put short term profit ahead of the health of the planet :\

i'd describe it as balance rather than negativity.

to me, cheering the benefits of something outside the context of the associated costs is pretty pointless.

Has anyone pointed out that the only place you even hear the anthem is at sports events?* And high school graduations? You say the Pledge of Allegiance, from when we were fighting against totalitarianism, at government functions.

I think the only reason is because it works so well for some solo diva to out-yodel the last bars. Venues can compete by booking famous people to perform. So is part of the counter-protest that these guys have snuck some earnestness in to the show? Like a genuinely sad scene during a rom-com? Forced-solemnity for a government-sponsored social ritual, involving worship of something other than Jesus and the hard-working individual, isn't very American.

*OK, yes I hear it every day at 7:30 and 4:30 from the base nearby, but that's gotta be rare for most, right? They used to play revelry, which was at least more fitting in the morning, but I guess the tape got eaten.

Trading partners come to mind, if you want to stick to just GDP.. I'm sure you could ask your Santa Clara buddies how they think those travel not-bans will impact their future revenue. Keeping health insurance laws in limbo is not the best for the small businessman.

The state goes back three quarters just to calculate your unemployment benefits, and we're currently in Trump's third quarter. But go ahead and credit him now, we'll keep that in mind in nine months.

Why do black ppl need to formally protest anything?

Has there been a secret gas chamber operated directly by Trump that was found that was gassing blacks?

This current mess we are in race wise was started by traitorous americans that hate this country and are using the MSM and liberal politics to keep a never ending inferiority complex to keep black people under their thumb.

Divide and conquer, white people are not the problem, it's the ultra wealthy that want to reduce opportunity and freedoms.

Every reality is 50% the other person, and you never really know what is in a man's heart. It is very easy to project ourselves into the people around us, both in person and there on screen.

I hate to tell you this I really do but racism is very real. I live in Alabama I hear it everyday when there are no minorities around. When people think it's safe to say what they really think. It's very real. Thank some imagined deity that we don't have ethnic cleansing but there is no doubt in my mind that systemic racism is alive and well in the south.
