2015 Academy Awards Predictions

I should note that I'm not a biggot, I just find movies a form of entertainment and Selma and the Imitation Game are movies about serious subjects, and are not very interesting. I was looking forward to the Imitation Game before I seen it, and thought it was a waste of time, there's just nothing entertaining at all. I found Nightcrawler much more engaging.

God dang it, i was this close to picking redmayne. I knew they'd never give it to Keaton but Carell was too much of a stretch I guess. And honestly I think its bullshit Linklater didnt get it.

I guess they were hell bent on shutting down the Lego Movie, too. That Glory crap is such generic garbage.

Probably have a bunch of movies to still watch. Probably check Moore out in Still Alice, I thought Maps to the Stars was really good.

Will Birdman live up to the hype? :?

i liked neil patrick harris as a host. i thought the whole thing a little lackluster this year.

I'd like to thank bluelight and bardeaux for making this thread. It was an honor just to participate in the same competition as you guys. Shout out to my kitty, Pam.

Whats next for mal3volent? Well im headed back over to the march madness thread in a few weeks to defend my belt.

Good job with the Oscar selecting. Nice win.

On a totally unrelated topic, are you going to any casinos any time soon?

I'd try and get you a fancy title for 'winning' this thread, but, well, you seem to be doing alright.

Michael Keaton was cute during the Best Film acceptance speech.
He had the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a little kid.

^ yea, happy for the guy. "who am i kidding, it's just great to be up here" love how he said that.

The handicap/retard card comes through with the win again. Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, Colin Firth, Jamie Foxx, Geoffrey Rush, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and now Eddie Redmayne. It seems you play a cripple or have a speech impediment and you are a shoo in for Best Actor.

1- It seems like a more difficult role to play
2- You have to be able to do so without offending the entire world, which is nearly impossible, especially when pretending to be handicap/disabled.
3- I am not a professional so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

(Don't forget Jack Nicholson for his OCD character in "As Good as it Gets".)

There are a bunch of exceptions...

Robert De Niro / catatonia / Awakenings.
Russel Crowe / schizophrenia / A Beautiful mind.
Robin Williams / The Fisher King.
John Hurt / The Elephant Man.

All nominated and all of them lost to people playing characters without disabilities, diseases or psychological disorders.

...

Firth deserved it for The King's Speech. Daniel Day-Lewis deserved it for My Left Foot.
I don't think Tom Hanks or Al Pacino even deserved to be nominated, for their respective performances.
Geoffrey Rush deserved it for Shine... although the two possible contenders both played disabled roles.

Apparently 16% of all actor / actress wins have been characters with some type of disability.

Im not saying any of them didn't deserve it, I'm just saying the good money should have been on Redmayne.

But we are assuming that these awards are somehow decided using some sort of quantitative measure. How many oscars are more of a lifetime achievement award rather than a direct comparison with their peers. How long before we see a CGI acting award?

It's not just that they're handicap, but several of these performances were based on real people. It's more of a testament to the actors ability to portray another person than it is the fact that they're handicap. I can understand your gripe more when you're talking about entirely fictionalized characters like Forrest, Forrest Gump.

It's not meant to be a gripe, simply pointing out the academy's love for a straight man playing a spastic. As they say, you never go full retard.

The same could be said for Daniel day Lewis in let there be blood. Strong emotional characters will often trump meek gentle acting.

I'm not really one for awards for art. One mans Picasso is another mans daughters scribble on the fridge. Sometimes we can all agree on greatness, other times greatness can decide opinion.
