More people were arrested last year in New York City on charges of marijuana possession than during the entire 19-year period from 1978 to 1996, according to an analysis released this morning by the Drug Policy Alliance.

Last year, the sixth year in a row that marijuana possession arrests increased, 50,383 people were arrested, according to a report recently released by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and obtained by the policy alliance, which advocates for reform of drug laws.

The figure adds up to 140 arrests a day, making marijuana possession the leading reason for arrest in the city, and represents an 8 percent increase over 2009 and a 69 percent increase since 2005, the alliance reported in a statement issued Thursday.

wow

can you vote in NY if you have drug felonies? I forgot.

I lived upstate (Tompkins County) for a while and under 25 grams is just a $100 ticket.

It's retarded they arrest this many people just to give them a $100 ticket. They are just pissed they can't do anything more for simple possession.

Police in the US at this period in time are now what I like to refer to as, CODE ENFORCERS. Basically the police is so desperate to make money they have started to arrest people for anything and everything to boost their profits. I predict in the near future that they will start to arrest people for even minor infractions like speeding, other minor traffic violations, and anything else you can think of that is "illegal"

I agree. I lived in NY for many years and its ALL bullshit. They keep fines at $100 or less for under 25 grams and its the most popular arrest so people will pay their $100 and go on their way without getting upset. The result is no medical marijuana in NY despite it being widely accepted and popular. It's a cash cow and things will never change as long as it's easy money.

Save the citizens! We can afford to put each one in a different cell with its own guard!

As a native NYCer, I find this more than just a little ridiculous. Busting people for marijuana is SUCH a waste of time...I'm not currently living there at the moment, but when I go visit home and watch local news, it seems like we should be spending government money on the fact that previously middle class folks in the outer-boros can no longer afford to eat, or the fact that the crime rates (not involving marijuana, since, well, I don't even know a pot-only dealer who carries a gun?) overall are decently high from such a large population squished into such a geographically small urban area.

Down here in Florida if you're caught with more than 20 grams (less than an ounce) of Maryjane it's an instant felony and they automatically revoke your drivers license for 2 years. Even if you are caught while walking down the street without a car in sight. Then after the two years, they want about $300 just to reinstate you license.

Two more days and my 2 year DL revoke is up. Now to just come up with the necessary money. :\
