no-one wants to go to the states to take drugs - not only will some bluelighters be forbidden from entering due to drug convictions, but also... i mean shit. why?

amsterdamage :D

What it all comes down to is it's going to expensive for some no matter where it takes place. Europe may seem like a middle ground between Australia and America, but it really isn't. If we keep in mind things like exchange rates (as long as they stay the same way they are now), the upshoot of airfare costs and other inevitable costs... it is unlikely that many Americans will be able to afford a European vacation.

I think in order to be fair to the largest amount of bluelighters, we should rationalize where *most* of the attendees would be coming from... I'm not sure how we could go about figuring that out but I'm guessing administrators have access to the numbers of posters from the various regions.

Personally, I'm all up for crashing xtcxtc's abode. I think he's smart enough to know if you give a mouse a cookie... ;)
I agree that we need to find a middle ground, that is why I thought that Europe would have been it. For the life of me I can't see how Thailand can be perceived as middle ground. Sure, once there, costs take a dive. It's not just the cost of Pepsi in the morning though. Aside from the much higher cost of air travel, you also have to rely on "giving mice cookies" in order to "stay safe". Don't misunderstand me, I have no doubt that those living there feel safe and know all the ins and outs of the local "system" to live a very liberal and care free life. I came from a place not too different in that respect and I've travelled a bit, so I know how. The problem is it still leaves things (read: your fate) to chance. I don't feel like waking up one morning and realising that someone with a political agenda has fed/bribed the mice more than I did and now the mice have decided to gnaw my limbs off. If I'm going to a place where word will spread (inevitably) that a large gathering of kande kids are gathering, I want to be absolutely sure that, in case of trouble, I can rely on the legal system in place, not bribe money I may not have enough of, to get me out safely. This can't always be said for Thailand, as far as I'm aware. Everything is happy go lucky until the shit hits the fan. Then, you may be shit out of luck. At least in any first world country, if I'm unlucky enough to fall prey to some overzealous person of local authority, I know I can pick up the phone and dial Johnny (Cochrane) and get bail and be home by dinner time, instead of spending weeks or months in a hot, sweaty cell contemplating how I should have fed the mice more.

I know I'm going to the extreme here, but I'm kind of fanatical that way when it comes to preserving my freedom. Look, sorry to be so blunt, but it took a fucking lot for me to achieve this freedom, and I'm not going to risk it in some third world paradise just so I can spend time with some people I met online, regardless of how cool you feckers come off. ;)

i think the island in thailand is brilliant, just as long as noone invites that leonardo guy...what a tool.

ok bad joke, so forreal...i am so up for europe/amsterdam, if you bluelighters suck in person, or if for some odd reason, noone thinks i am as brilliant as I do....it would still be a fabulous trip, and not at all a waste of money!!

Precisely. Let's not forget that some people might be doing this meet as part of their holiday trip. It would make sense then to do a location like Europe as it's a great launching point to go in any of four directions by foot, train or plane. This way, if DarthMom doesn't come off as brilliant as she thinks she is, I'm not left romancing the stone on some island for a week. ;)

Amsterdam. :)

as fun as an island would be, i am not sure i want to be stuck on an island with just BLers...
^ Coming to a movie theatre near you:

Lord of the Flies - with DRUGS!

Watch in horror as the lawless druggies split into different camps. Cheer on the meth-heads as they fight the crackheads on the beach in a battle for supremacy. Laugh at the hippies as they struggle for survival in a harsh world. Recoil in horror at the smackheads resorting to cannibalism.

Sounds awesome to me. :D

But to repeat what has been said loads of times... I don't think Thailand is a realistic venue for this. It sounds great, but what's the point of making it a long journey and expensive for nearly everyone? Not to mention the time commitment too, it's not really the type of place you'd go for the weekend. Hardly anyone would go. :\

I am not convinced of the practicality of ONE global meetup. How about having three? One in the US, one in Australia, and one in THE DAM? :D Surely most people could make one of them? Space them out over a few months and the hardened Bluelighters could go to all of them. ;)

Sorry if that's all been said before, but I can't be arsed reading through all 29 pages.

+1 for the Dam, I would definitely go. Can we not do it THIS year???

BL meetups ROCK. =D

No, having 3 would be shit. You'd only get people going to specific areas... I doubt for example you'd get any americans or europeans going to australia if it's not going to be a big thing. It would also be like going to a normal meetup except maybe a little bigger. Isn't the whole point of this to meet people from different areas of the world in a special circumstance and to celebrate the 10 year anniversary together?

No, we're not doing it this year! I don't really think Thailand is a great idea. Nice place, but no... and probably same with somewhere like India too (but I would jump at that). Amsterdam is the most sound choice thus far. :)

EDIT: The US and Australia are also bad locations for people to go to if they have drug charges against them. :(

Totally impractical, but the Goa region of India would be awesome were costs not a concern. Beautiful beaches, vibrant electronic music scene, but probably incredibly expensive for travel.

Outside of that, what could be better than Amsterdam?

^hey dude, how much ISRAEL?
i dunno, wtf ISRAEL btw?
something about a train i think

sillyalien, you saved my life.

I would have to second pekkie's comments about USA and Australia.

i've got some things that could make the time just whizz by ;)

ever play something called: hungry hungry hippos?! :D

Amsterdam seems like the country of the thread. we could always make a poll out of the most popular candidates thrown in the thread, if we want to...

I was actually planning on making a vacation to amsterdam in a couple of months for my own personall vacation I live on the east coast and found airfare for under $500.00 roundtrip. I was searching during "off season" which made the rates go down drastically....

This is also another idea.. To have the meet-up during "off-season" not in high traffic summertime. With lower rates for airfare/hotels etc etc you have even a bigger chance of a better turn-out rate....

hahaha. you shouldn't be concerned about the drug laws in the States, lefty. don't worry. I've broken them every day for years. and I've never got thrown in a jail. for drug-related reasons, that is ;)

I have and at a bluelight event to boot. So have a fair few of my friends here. lol. so im down to meet up in 2009 anywhere where there are lax drug laws. hell i may even take a few if i go. Basically since being arrested in the states my partying days especially at meetups have declined drastically. I have no problem meeting up in any area though i just wont be taking/holding drugs. Also i would like a foriegn country ebcause while drugs can be fun sometimes a hole in the wall pub with 20 of your crazy friends in a foriegn country can be even more fun.

SillyAlien - my "if you give a mouse a cookie" allusion was suppose to point to the fact that xtcxtc in particular has already given so much (at least in terms of financial stability) to bluelight. I don't actually think Thailand is a good idea. I was simply trying to make a joke; a joke that obviously wasn't very funny.

Squeaks - I just came back from Amsterdam this summer and airfare is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of costs. In the end I spent way more money while in the country than trying to get there. I just think we should really keep these concerns in the forefront of our minds.

also depending on how many you can get to book together there are packages for group discounts. so thats something that should be researched as well.

^^ Okay, cost is fo sho an issue for many, and we need to maximize the amount of peeps coming. Therefore, the above has mentioned some great ideas.

1) Off season planning, for cheap rates on air
2) Combined group discount rates, requiring local organization for an airport meetup

Also, I suggest that for whatever country it is planned in, the people who know it the best present some ideas for outsiders to save money while staying there. This includes cheap rooms, the best deals in transportation, etc
