2006 NFL Thread

The bears play the dolphins this weekend, so you may as well pencil them in at 8-0.

Colts/Pats should be a barn burner

Peyton is going to get his balls bashed in up at Gillette stadium.
Brady brings the pain at home, Pats by 7.

Was a good game though

i tried my hand at nfl betting on sunday. if the bengals had beaten the ravens, i would have made $420 from my $5 - roll on next sunday :)

Yeah that was definitely a shocker. Brady's tipped interception at the end zone pretty much sealed the deal.
Manning definitely stepped up and delivered the goods on the road.

There was no doubt that he would, even though I thought the Pats would win. Manning is easily the best player in the league and had it been him driving the length of the field with 1:40 to play and needing a touchdown, the Colts would have scored. What surprised me was Indy's secondary really tightening up. Brady's 4 interceptions were the difference maker. And it's about time Peyton went in there and beat him. Brady might have 3 rings and consistently beat Manning in the big games, but he is not the better quarterback, not by a looong shot.

Typically I'd just reference the stats, which are in Manning's favor. He holds the record for touchdown receptions in a single season, has a higher passer rating than Brady (although I don't ascribe that much merit to the rating system), every year is pretty much an automatic 4,000 yard season (his rookie season and last year being the only time he came up a little short) and the last 3 years his completion percentage was close to 70 percent which trumps Brady and pretty much everyone else in the league right now. But there is so much more to Peyton Manning than the stats.

He has every intangible you could possibly think of: leadership, awareness, field vision, work ethic. He's not a very good rushing quarterback, but he has so much pocket presence and general awareness that he can avoid the rush and shoot of a pass to the open receiver better than any quarterback I can think of. Their pass blocking, therefore, doesn't even have to be that good because his awareness and skill level are so high it negates a subpar offensive line. Rush blocking is a different story, but he can also negate a weak running game (as you've seen this season). He also compensates, to an extent, for a bad defense. Of course this is purely conjecture, but I cannot believe any other team in the league with a defense like Indy's would threaten to go undefeated 2 years in a row in the modern NFL. They are 8-0 right now, having gone on the road and beaten 2 very good teams in New England and Denver, despite having THE WORST RUN DEFENSE IN THE NFL. This is really, really impressive if you think about it.

And he is the best simply because he is the most intelligent player in the game. The way he reads defenses and calls audibles at the line, the way he knows when to take a sack, the way he knows how to manage the clock. He knows exactly what to do and makes virtually zero mental mistakes. Just go back and watch the tape from that Monday Night comeback against Tampa Bay. If you need a score to save your life, Peyton Manning is the guy you want at quarterback.

Which is why I think it's unfair that due to a somewhat below average defense, he has never won a championship. Because if you have to play all the top-tier teams in the league consecutively, the odds are your defensive weaknesses will be uncovered at some point and exploited. He can only carry them so far.

do you think he'd swap all of that for a superbowl ring (let alone three)? :)

thanks for taking the time to expand - i'm inclined to agree.

Agreed. Manning is like nothing I have seen before. After watching him destroy the Broncos defense (which I must say was pretty damn good before the last two weeks) and eat up the Pats defense I am thoroughly impressed. This guy allthough he has not won a ring can put up numbers against anybody. For all the above reasons listed above by Benefit he is the best quarterback in the league. What he can accomplish in his whole career will be truly amazing.

Now to the point I wanted to get to.

I just can not see the Colts winning a super bowl. Manning despite his amazing level of skill can not carry that team throughout the playoffs. The defensive front 7 is far too weak to stop a running attack. In the playoffs the best teams will continuely run the ball down the Colt's throats wearing out their defensive front. The way to beat the Colt's is to keep the ball out of Manning's hands.

The inability to stop the run opens up many oppurtunities for the offense when the Colts try to key in on stopping the run. In my opinion either Denver or New England will end the Colts run at a championship once again.

For the Colts to be succesful they need to get a big sized defensive lineman to stuff the run and occupy bodies of the offensive line. Right now they are specialized in rushing the quarterback and do a pretty good job of it but this will not offset their inability to control the ground game.

I would just like to say that deleting your post because you made a bad pick is incredibly lame.

^ Yeah, srsly. I made a bad pick on rooting for my hometeam and posting all kinds of stats and shit that immediately made me look like an idiot, but I still stand behind them! Well, sort of.. Fuckin' Redskins... :p

=D

I look like an idiot everytime I post.

Well, at least in this thread :)

But if your team were the Chickens (er, Hawks) you'd look like an idiot most of the time, too.

Erasing previous posts because you made a bad pick?! 8(

Retarded.

How about the Giants at home against the Bears this weekend? I went 12-4 last week in the work football pool and tied for 1st place but lost on the monday night game points total, still got $40 though.

Bears going into Giants stadium is going to be a kick ass game. Can't wait!

Wow we actually agree on somthing? Not really. Well okay a little. I've always liked Manning, but UT's defense was great, and he choked. He choked then at UT and he still chokes in the big games. I think he has the most talent in the league, and if he ever wins the big game, then he'll be a multi ring winner.
