2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

Hey guys, can you please ID my find? I am still waiting on the sport prink but I can say that they didn't bruise noticably blue except for the third lot which were very dark.

These had noticeably yellow gills, Can they still be subs?

These look quite different from the above, are they a different kind of sub or just those ones grown up?

These ones had very dense gills and were far darker than the others. In the background you can see an upturned speci.

Yeah I know I should "never go mushroom hunting without the supervision of an experienced shroomer" but in the absence of anyone putting their hand up........Thanx peeps :)

nope none of those are subs. The top ones are an interesting type of fungi though! I bet if you touched them they are sort of slimy.

Note in the second picture the gills joining with the stem is not the same as subs. pluss there is no blueing

the 3rd I have never seen before.

and 4th picture is what I believe to be stropharia

Simply put none of the mushrooms in your pictures are P. subs. Keep looking though!
 
Chucky, you probably could just throw the mushrooms into a bag with sealed sachets of desiccant to redry them, but as you're dealing with larger amounts i'd want to make sure it was absolutely cracker dry if I was intending them to last through till next season.

When I redryed my mushrooms, I filled several tupperware containers with approx 2 inch's of desiccant, placed the mushrooms in bowls/ smaller containers inside (so they couldn't touch the desiccant), sealed it up and left it for several days. Make sure air can easily move within the container (i.e. use containers small enough so there is a cm or so gap between the sides of the inner and desiccant holding container). If you are dealing with powder, i'd try to use flatter containers inside the tupperware (= greater surface area exposed), possibly stirring/ turning over the powder after a couple of days. The desiccant will clump up as pulls the moisture from the mushrooms, pick these clumpy bits off and reseal again for another 24 hrs or so.

When i'm too lazy to cap powder (dry powder), I put 2 or 3 desiccant sachets into a NEW ziplock baggie, add the powder, squeeze all the air out, seal, then place it inside another ziplock baggie with another desiccant sachet. All these double baggies packages get thrown inside a container at the back of a cupboard.

I'm lucky to have dozens of desiccant sachets on hand, you can never use too much desiccant or have mushrooms too dry ;) If you don't have many desiccant sachets around, you could easily forgo the double baggie step, and store all the single bags inside a tupperware container lined with approx 1inch of desiccant. You don't need to suspend the bags above the desiccant as the mushroom powder is protected by the plastic bags. Ask your mates to give you their 'Do Not Eat' desiccant sachets from all their vitamins, nori paper (seaweed sheets used for sushi), new electrical equipment or many other things that are packed with desiccant sachets.
 
Come on Fry-d-, ease up. This person has gone to the trouble of taking photos of fungus, then posted it on a harm minimisation web site so people more knowledgable in a topic than themself can identify the mushroom as P/A or not P/A. This is a much better scenario than "well im not sure what this is, I think it's a P. Sub, I think thats blueing, ahhh fuck it I'll eat it anyway and see what happens."

I know im a newbie and blah blah, but streetsurfer has minimised the harm that could have been done if they had not posted the pictures. Isnt that a key reason why bluelight exists?

Good on ya streetsurfer for going about educating yourself on shrooms safely. I suggest going to the shroomery next time as people are not so quick to ridicule.
 
The problem I have is that I have asked previously that people don't come here to ID shrooms. If their going to ask for shroom ID's that they supply decent macro photo's and spore prints so that if an ID is made you can be 100% sure. Think about what happens if someone comes to bluelight posts a crappy photo of a poisonous mushroom and someone on bluelight tells them to eat it.

I stand by my post. If you don't know what your looking for you shouldn't be looking. If mongman can so quickly see that none of streetsurfers photos are anything even close to psubs streetsurfer obviously hasn't done much research before going hunting.....
 
No I copped shit over there as well even though I have shown
(a) the habitat
(b) the size, (see the 5 cent piece??)
(c) Said I was doing a sport print
(d) decribed the blueing
(e) descibed the gills

I know there was plenty I left out but I figured people would be able to tell str8 away if they were the real deal or not and I was right.
I rekon it is just intellectual fucking snobbery the way people carry on in regards to mushroom ID'ing. People getting off on some "I am a mystical shaman" type trip. Pisses me off.
 
There is no intellectual snobbery here. We are trying to save you from poisoning yourself. You do realise you can die if you eat the wrong mushroom. Without all the information and decent photographs no one can be completely 100% certain of what you have.

I know I would want to be 100% sure I wasn't going to poison myself.

How much do you value your health?

Is a 5% chance your probably not going to poison yourself enough for your piece of mind?

Fry-d- is just trying to protect the site he is a moderator of dont be to hard on him. I also think that newbies posting on here is good in that it can avoid potential harm. However I dont think that possitive IDs should be given due to the possible affect it could have on bluelight as a whole. That said the hardest bit is getting this fact across to punters who just want to find and eat some good shrooms.

EDIT: Instead of a possitive ID people should say something like "It might be a P. Sub. but Im not completly sure. Try taking them to a mycologist at a uni etc, but please dont eat them until your completly sure"

You said "I can say that they didn't bruise noticably blue". Therefore your mushrooms ARE NOT magic mushrooms. Not all blueing mushrooms are magic ones, it is true, but non-blueing ones ARE NOT the ones you are looking for. You already knew this before you went searching for mushrooms, and before you made your post.

Don't get defensive, you're just barking up the wrong tree. Clearly, if you're copping a flaming at both Bluelight and The Shroomery, there's gotta be something wrong with the questions you're asking. Maybe you need to read more on the subject ... like the previous 28 pages of THIS THREAD which includes so many photos of magic mushrooms found in Australia, in their natural habitat, which have been conclusively identified by experienced pickers as p.subs (OT: Which is why I keep asking people for macro photographs of single specimens, not distance brag-shots of bags of mushies, which are useless.)

DayTrippa: He asked the question, and got his answer anyway. Fry-d- didn't even flame him, besides a 'thumbs down' icon which was earnt for going against the simple request made earlier in the thread to not request IDs (NB: pharmaceutical tablet IDs are banned in many forums for the identical reason... i.e., 'what's this, can i get high off it??' questions are NOT harm reduction).

I don't really think people are being "quick to ridicule" when this thread and many like it at the shroomery say "Magic mushrooms are A, B, C." and he posted pics of "D, E, F" and asked "are these p.subs?", knowing what the answer would be in the first place.

I hope that explains the situation for everyone again. Let's just quit this nonsense and get on with discussing magic mushrooms, because this thread is going nowhere fast.

I think it's good for people to post pics here to get a definately NO, as for a definate YES, i've seen people in response to ID posts directing users towards the shroomery, where they are very much likely to get a good ID. I see nothing wrong with people using bluelight as a first line of defense, the poster now knows to throw out all those mushrooms, had they not posted on here, they may have done something stupid.

I see the point of view the mods are putting forth, I just think that as long as people on here are giving good ID's and not acting like they know more than they do, then I see nothing wrong with it.

by the way - it's much much MUCH easier to ID that a mushroom is NOT a p.sub than to ID that it is.

I guess the only prob now is coming accross sachets of dessicant. I know I've seen a few in the last 6 months, but i dont knowif I could actually come up with any. Is there any real cheap product I could buy that would include a dessicant sachet???

Or maybe does someone know a good way to make a makeshift sachet?? (it would have to be gauranteed not to leak obviously !)

I got a shitload from shoes, look in old shoe boxes or check the supermarket, just goto a shoe store and steal them all..
 
Go to a few shoe shops and ask them, when i've worked in retail we've always had heaps of shoe boxes and sachets out the back. If you ask nicely most sales staff will give you the sachets from current floor stock (read lots!) as the conditions in most storerooms mean you really don't need silica gel in the shoe boxes to keep the shoes all nice.

Otherwise google silica gel for stockists within Australia, Ebay also sells silica gel sachets for $10-$20 for bags of 50 little sachets.

You can also make little sachets to hold desiccant with paper and sewing machine, but i personally wouldn't bother. Its a royal pain in the butt, doesn't do a particualy good job but most importantly, you really shouldn't have a single layer of paper separating mushrooms/ powder and desiccant (as the chemicals from the desiccant can seep through the paper both possibly rehydrating your mushrooms and infusing your mushrooms with calcium chloride - mmm tasty;) Multiple layers of paper lessen this issue but also lessen the desiccant's effectiveness.

If you really can't get silica sachets, just store the powder in bowls sitting inside desiccant filled tuppeware containers in a dark place.

I just get paper towel and wrap the desiccant up in the towel until I have a neat little package then put a lacka band around it to stop in unraveling. Its works for many years for me.
 
I can see both sides to the argument of ID's online. I can definitely see where the mods are coming from in terms of an incorrect ID, especially if it was Gallerina that was mistakinly ID'ed as a P. Sub. But for the inexperienced shroomer it still does way more good than harm to get peoples opinion online. Just a question, is bluelight liable if an Id is incorrect and someone is sick?

After much research (Im talking hours and hours and hours) I finally ventured out and found my first Subs. I dont own a digital camera, so I had to ID them myself. Anything that I wasnt 100% was binned, even if they were growing side by side, if one didnt turn a definite blue and have a purple spore print it was chucked.

Had 4 medium sized ones and enjoyed the ride. I smashed LSD when I was younger but the mushroom experience was very different. I only had mild visuals but I had a real intense feeling that was a bit like K. Anyone else feel that way. It was pretty cool watching the cricket because the white of the uniforms went from lime green to purple to red.

They were very hard to come by (im in the state of no rain, NSW), but look forward to more shroomy days in the future. I must say the best part of the whole experience was seeing them in the field and saying "yep, thats them for sure" and then seeing the blue come through! JOY!
 
Hey I can see where your coming from for sure and I was maybe a little more narked than I should have been cos I had posted on shroomery as well (and on another mycology website) and some little dick with 60 posts who admitted himself to being a newbie decided to give me a lecture on describing shrooms.
I did do a bit of reserch but it was months ago as winter was approaching and when rain never came (I am in sydney) it kind of fell by the wayside until I was out HOUSE hunting the other day and came across a patch and brought em back for an opionion. I was pretty sure they were not the real deal but thought I would ask anyway.

As I said I posted on 3 websites andwould have waited for a dozen or so replys before ingesting but yeah, there are dumb fucks out there fair enuff. Tis all good :)

this is only my second season eating and identifiying shrooms, so, although im fairly confidant in my ability to find them, im completely unsure of how long the season lasts.

i know there's no locations allowed, but im in the central victorian area, lets say roughly around an hour from bendigo. Last season i noticed perhaps late july i couldnt find anymore mush, and this left me devestated for not truly appreciating them whilst readily available.

therefore, i hate the concept of being so ignorant again this year.
its the 21 of july and i havent been able to search for a good two weeks. i want to go hunting tomorrow but im nervous as to whether or not they'll be there. however, its still very wet and cold, except its starting to get dark later thus winter is slowing down...does anybody else have many recent success stories in vic?
